Wireless networking uses radio frequency signals to connect your laptop (or PDA, tablet etc) to the Campus Computer Network. When you use radio signals instead of wires to connect to the network you can move around and even access the network while outdoors in particular locations.
To use the wireless network your laptop (or PDA, tablet etc) must be equipped with a wireless network adapter. The Flinders University Wireless Network predominately uses the 802.11b/g wireless standards.
The Flinders University Wireless Network supports the access methods listed below:
Wireless users are advised to install Anti Virus Software and the latest operating system patches to their computer to insure it is not vulnerable to viruses or network attacks.
The wireless network is not a replacement for the wired network. Since it is a moderate performance network (11Mb/s to 54Mb/s) and a shared resource, some netiquette applies:
The Wireless Network is a part of the Flinders University information technology environment. By your use of this resource, you have implicitly agreed to abide by the Acceptable Use of ICT Resources policy and are required to comply with all University policies and State and Federal laws concerning appropriate use of information technology. Non-compliance is considered a serious breach of community standards and may result in disciplinary or legal action.
