Role of OHS Unit
The Occupational Health and Safety Unit provides:
- a central co-ordinating role for occupational health and
safety and rehabilitation
- expert advice to the University community.
It does not carry out OH&S tasks that are the responsibility
of managers and supervisors.
The Occupational Health and Safety Unit reports to the Vice-Chancellor
through the Executive Director of Administration.
Terms of Reference:
- In consultation with management, staff, Health and Safety
Representatives, staff associations and unions, take a leading
role in developing the University's Occupational Health
Safety and Welfare policies and programs;
- Provide advice and assistance on health, safety and welfare
matters to management, employees, students and their associations/unions
and to all levels of the University's Occupational Health
Safety and Welfare Organisation. Provide secretarial support
to the University Occupational Health and Safety Committee;
- Monitor changes in standards and legislative requirements
and how these are applied in court and recommend implementation
strategies;
- Identify training needs on health, safety and welfare
issues for University employees and students and assist
in the provision of training to management, staff and students.
Keep staff conscious of their responsibility for those who
work or study under them;
- Coordinate workers rehabilitation strategies and liaise
with the Claims Management Unit on workers compensation matters. (Refer

- Maintain records as required by law and analyse statistical
data for presentation to management and the University Occupational
Health and Safety Committee to assist with Occupational
Health and Safety planning and allocation of priorities;
- Investigate any issues raised by individuals or by the
University Occupational Health and Safety Committee or any
serious accidents/incidents that have occurred, and provide
a report with recommendations as are necessary to the Vice-Chancellor
and the University Occupational Health and Safety Committee;
- Report to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Occupational
Health and Safety Committee if any decisions of the University
Council are not implemented by the appropriate Officers;
- In conjunction with the Buildings and Property Department,
monitor or co-ordinate the University's emergency response
measures including fire, chemical spill, first aid and emergency
procedures;
- Liaise with the Buildings and Property Department to ensure
matters relating to occupational health, safety and welfare
are incorporated during the design of new and refurbished
buildings;
- Liaise with various Government Departments or other relevant
bodies on issues of health, safety and welfare as appropriate;
- Maintain a library of technical and general information
on workplace hazards and make this available to staff members
and the University community;
- Promote healthy lifestyle programs throughout the University
to raise the general health and fitness of University employees.
