Laser Safety

FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is committed to providing
a safe working environment for all staff, students and visitors.
This extends to the provision of a safe environment where
lasers are used.
Therefore, in accordance to Australian Standard AS/NZS 2211.1:2004
section 10.1, the Faculty has appointed a Laser Safety Office
(LSO).
The responsibilities of the LSO are to:
i) Maintain a register of class 3B and class 4 lasers;
ii) Assist laser workers in evaluating laser hazards;
iii) Determine Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) levels
as required as part of risk assessment;
iv) Train laser workers and their supervisors in the safe
use of lasers*;
v) Ensure signage, control measures and safety devices are
in accordance with AS/NZS 2211.1:2004;
vi) Investigate laser incidents resulting in injury; and
vii) Encourage class 3B and class 4 laser workers to have
eye examinations.
The responsibilities of supervisors of laser workers are to:
i) Ensure that risk assessments are done for each laser area;
ii ) Provide all necessary laser safety/protection devices
as determined by the risk assessment; and
iii) Permit laser workers time off for training and eye examinations.
The responsibility of laser workers is to:
i) Not to misuse lasers;
ii) Not put themselves or others at undue risk of injury;
iii) Use whatever safety protection and equipment supplied;
and
iv) Follow all reasonable safety instructions from the supervisor
and LSO.

* Training should be held at least once per year and include
(but not limited to):
i) Classification of lasers;
ii) Laser danger awareness, including potential damage to
eyes and skin; and
iii) Hazard control methods including signage, key control,
beam paths, bean stops, specular and diffuse reflections,
eye and skin protection.
