OHS Training Guideline

Managers and supervisors must ensure that new staff receive a local area induction in which they are informed of area-specific hazards before commencing work.  This includes new academic staff.

Staff and students must not operate any vehicle, item of plant or equipment if they do not hold the required current licence or certificate of competency. They must only perform tasks for which they are adequately trained.
Different occupational groups have different OHS training needs.

To determine the OHS training required

See the Flowchart.
  • First consult the OHS Training Needs Analysis Table. The training requirements shown in this Table reflect the OHS responsibilities specified in Item 7 of the OHSW Policy. You must ensure that staff and students in each occupational group in your area receive the training specified in this Table.

  • Then assess specific tasks performed by each person you supervise and determine the OHS training that is required to safely perform those tasks.  The Local Training Table will assist you to:
    • track the OHS training required;
    • record the date that the training was provided; and
    • the date on which refresher training is required.

Training available via the OHS Unit includes:

For more information on OHS courses, including advice regarding engaging external consultants to assist with specific OHS training needs, phone the OHS Unit on (13024).

The Staff Development and Training Unit (13873) is also available to work with managers and supervisors on a range of topics including assistance with Training Needs Analyses for specific groups.

Note: Staff supervising other staff or volunteer workers must undertake the OHS on-line training program.

Staff supervising students must undertake the level of OHS training determined by their Executive Dean of Faculty or Head of School / Department or nominee in accordance with a risk assessment process.
