Health and Safety Representative Training

 

Health and Safety Representatives

Note: Representatives must obtain the permission of their supervisors for time to attend training before contacting the OH&S Unit to book their chosen training dates.

There are three levels of training for health and safety representatives - Basic, Advanced and Continuing.

Accredited training is offered by:

  • South Australian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry

  • United Trades and Labour Council

Health and Safety Representative Training - Basic

Who it's for: Health and Safety Representatives
Description: This course is the first round of training for health and safety representatives. It is designed to ensure that the health and safety representatives achieve the required understanding of their role and are equipped with the necessary skills to perform their prescribed functions as defined by the Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Act, 1986. The successful completion of this course will enable the elected representative to contribute to the ongoing management of health and safety in their workplace.
Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of the workshop participants will be able to demonstrate that they:
  1. Have the knowledge, skills and competencies required to effectively represent their work group;
  2. Are aware of the factors involved in work related injury and disease;
  3. Have the skills required for the development and implementation of preventative strategies;
  4. Have the consultative and negotiation skills relevant to occupational health and safety.
Length: Five days
Accreditation: Training will be provided by accredited external organisations.


Health and Safety Representative Training - Advanced

Who it's for: Health and Safety representatives
Description: This course is the second round of training for health and safety representatives. Specific attention is given to the communication processes which operate in organisations; the analysis of occupational injury data; and how to work with other people to improve health and safety in the workplace. Industry specific hazards are addressed on two days of the workshop.
Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of the workshop participants will be able to demonstrate that they:
  1. Have the skills necessary for the processes of consultation;
  2. Have the knowledge, skills and competencies to address specific health and safety issues which affect their work group and working environment;
  3. Have the skills necessary to represent employers on workplace issues;
  4. Have the ability to present a structured presentation to others on workplace hazards/issues.
Length: Five days
Accreditation: Training will be provided by accredited external consultants.


Health and Safety Representative Training - Continuing

Who it's for: Health and Safety Representatives
Description: This one day workshop is the core day of the third and subsequent rounds of training for health and safety representatives. This core day is designed to update representatives on changes to health and safety legislation and provide them with an opportunity to share ideas. Representatives are required to participate in an additional four days training which addresses health and safety issues or enhance the health and safety representative's skills.
Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of the workshop participants will be able to demonstrate that they:
  1. Have an awareness of changes to legislation;
  2. Are able to effectively select training appropriate to their workplace and hazards/issues.
Length: One day
Accreditation: Training will be provided by accredited external consultants.


Deputy Health and Safety Representative Training

    Note: Deputy Representatives must obtain the permission of their supervisors for time to attend training before contacting the OH&S Unit to book their chosen training dates.
Who it's for: Deputy Health and Safety representatives
Description: This training is designed to provide participants with a basic overview of occupational health and safety legislation, and the practical skills necessary to undertake the role of deputy to the elected health and safety representative.
Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of the workshop participants will be able to understand the legal framework for occupational health and safety, and be able to participate as an active member within the occupational health and safety organisational structure.
Length: Three days
Accreditation: Training will be provided by accredited consultants.
