The GCC is the world's largest corporate health initiative. Developed especially for the workplace to tackle the global health crisis from longer workdays, sedentary occupations, and little or no exercise.
Healthier people mean healthier, happier and more productive workplaces and that is what GCC achieves.
The average worker takes about 1,000-3,000 steps a day the World Health Organisation recommends that white collar workers aim for 10,000 steps a day to improve their health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
GCC provides the tools, motivations and support to make 10,000 steps an achievable goal.
The GCC is a 16 week health and wellbeing program that encourages employees to be active.
A team of seven is entered and each day for the 16 weeks participants log onto the GCC website and record their step count (plus and bicycle and swimming distances). The site then adds the individual steps to the team total and then converts them to a kilometer/mile distance. The site then plots the team's progression along the virtual tour of the world.
Employees develop a habit and find opportunities to reach 10,000 steps such as taking the stairs, going for a walk during their lunch break and being aware of how active/inactive they are using the pedometer provided in the GCC registration pack.
Most importantly, participants are exercising more, gaining from the health benefits and developing new health habits which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Studies on participants from previous GCC have shown that at the end of the challenge:
- The risk of developing Type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease are reduced.
- Cholesterol and blood glucose can be reduced by up to 6%.
- That 20-60% of participants lose up to a significant amount of weight.
- Participants took 2.3 less sick days than non participating colleagues.
To register a team of 7 for the 2011 Challenge, it costs $693 ($99 per person)
