The Guidelines for Language Use are to be promulgated
within the University. Staff and students are encouraged to
use language which does not distinguish between the sexes
where such a distinction is irrelevant to the matter at hand
and where such a distinction has the intended or unintended
consequence of reinforcing outmoded beliefs about women's
or men's capacities. |
| 2. |
Members of staff should avoid using "man" generically
in framing course rules, in lectures, tutorials and handouts; |
| 3. |
Members of staff should avoid using "he" generically in
framing course rules, in lectures, tutorials and handouts. |
| 4. |
The University, as a matter of policy, will provide the
opportunity for female staff and students to indicate their
preference with respect to title. Where no preference is indicated,
the University should adopt the title "Ms" since marital status
is irrelevant to the purposes of the University. |
| 5. |
The University will adopt gender-neutral titles for all
jobs (e.g., "watchman" becomes "security officer"). |
| 6. |
The use of language in University documents which implies
any attitude towards the sex or marital status of its employees
or students will be discouraged unless that attitude (for
good reason) actually exists. |
| 7. |
The rewriting of the Statutes and Regulations in gender-neutral
language will be expedited. |
| 8. |
"The Chairperson" will be used as the title of all positions
which require someone to chair a meeting in the University. |
