Allen Hudson Memorial Prize for Practical Nursing

  • The prize shall be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • The value of the prize shall be determined each year by the trustee of the Allen Hudson Memorial Prize for Practical Nursing fund.
  • The prize shall be awarded to a second year student in the Bachelor of Nursing Pre-registration program who demonstrates excellence in clinical practice.

The AMGEN Australia Prize for Excellence in Biotechnology Research

The prize is to encourage excellence in research within traditional or modern biotechnology.

It is open to all students completing the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Biotechnology in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Medicine.

The following rules shall apply to the prize donated by AMGEN Australia Pty Ltd:

  • The prize shall be known as The AMGEN Australia Prize for Excellence in Biotechnology Research.
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize, which will be available annually, will be awarded by the Biotechnology Examinations Board. Any student fulfilling the requirements for award of the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Biotechnology is eligible for the prize.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student demonstrating academic and experimental research excellence during the fourth (Honours) year of the degree program whose performance is judged to be the best by reference, principally, to achievements in the topic Advanced Biotechnology Practice.

Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists' Prize in Anaesthesia

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Third and Fourth Year BMBS Examinations Board of the School of Medicine.
  • The prize shall consist of a certificate and a book voucher to the value of $300. In the event of a tie, two prizes shall be awarded.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the final year student whose performance in Anaesthesia is judged to be the best.

The Australian Chinese Medical Association Awards

The Australian Chinese Medical Association has provided funds for two annual awards to foster medical students' interest in community medicine. The second year award is available for the period 1995-2007 and the third year award for the period 2000-2007, in the first instance. The following rules will apply to the award:

  • The awards may be made annually by the BMBS Examinations Boards of the School of Medicine.
  • The value of each award shall be $300.
  • The second year award shall be made to the student enrolled in the BMBS course whose first semester essay for the topic MMED8230 Doctor, the Profession and Society 2, is judged to be the best.
  • The third year award shall be made to the student enrolled in the BMBS course whose 'transfer of care' letter and final tutorial presentation for the continuity of care component of topic MMED8330 Doctor, the Profession and Society 3, are judged to be the best.

The Australian College of Ambulance Professionals' Prize for Research

  1. The name of the prize shall be the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals' Prize for Research.
  2. The prize will comprise a 12 month complimentary membership to the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals and a $100 book voucher.
  3. Subject to clauses 4 and 5, the prize shall be awarded annually by the Bachelor of Health Sciences Examinations Board to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Paramedic) who gains the highest mark in topic HLTH3001 Health Research.
  4. The Examinations Board of the Bachelor of Health Sciences shall judge whether a candidate is of sufficient merit to warrant the award of the prize.
  5. In the event of two or more eligible students receiving the same mark for the topic, the prize will be awarded to the student whose academic record in the course as a whole is judged to be the best.
  6. The prize shall be presented at the annual Bachelor of Health Sciences (Paramedic) dinner.

The Australian College of Midwives Inc Prize for Midwifery

  • The prize, donated by the Australian College of Midwives Inc (SA Branch), may be awarded each year by the Examinations Board: Undergraduate Programs, of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • The prize shall be a year's membership of the ACMI and the ACMI badge.
  • The prize shall be awarded to a final year student in the pre-registration Bachelor of Midwifery offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, including research, throughout the course and has satisfactory midwifery practice reports.

Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses (SA Branch) Prize for Academic Excellence

  • The prize shall be known as the Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses (SA Branch) Prize for Academic Excellence.
  • The prize, donated by the Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses (SA Branch) shall consist of financial membership with the Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses (SA Branch) for one full membership year and a book voucher to the value of $100.
  • The prize shall be awarded to a nursing student completing the Graduate Certificate in Health (Child, Adolescent and Family Health Nursing) program in the School of Nursing and Midwifery who demonstrates an outstanding academic record.

The Australian Institute of Environmental Health Prize

The Australian Institute of Environmental Health will award a prize to the best overall student graduating from the Bachelor of Environmental Health. The prize will be presented at the AIEH State Conference dinner which is usually held in April/May each year. The following rules will apply:

  • The prize shall be known as the Australian Institute of Environmental Health Prize.
  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the Bachelor of Environmental Health of the School of Medicine.
  • The value of the prize shall be $200. In addition, the prize will include a plaque.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student completing the third year of the course whose aggregate mark in second and third year topics is the highest.
  • Both full-time and part-time students are eligible for the prize.
  • No award shall be made if the Examinations Board of the Bachelor of Environmental Health, School of Medicine, deems there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

The Australian Medical Association (South Australia) Student Medal and Prize

To encourage academic achievement and student involvement in the life of the Medical Schools of the University of Adelaide and The Flinders University of South Australia, the Australian Medical Association (South Australia) Inc has established an annual award to be competed for by the final year students in the two Medical Schools. The following are the rules:

  1. The award shall be called The Australian Medical Association (South Australia) Student Medal and Prize.
  2. The value of the award shall be a medal and free AMA membership, if appropriate, at level FiY1, first year after graduation.
  3. The medal shall incorporate the name of the student, year of award and University attended.
  4. Two medals shall be awarded annually by the Australian Medical Association (South Australia) Inc; one to a student completing the Medical Course at the University of Adelaide and the second to a student completing the Medical Course at The Flinders University of South Australia.
  5. The medal for the University of Adelaide student shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of Medicine of the University of Adelaide to the final year student in the course for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery who is judged to have been the best student in terms of academic performance in the course and his or her contribution to the Faculty of Medicine through representing the interests of students and involvement in the life of the Adelaide Medical Students Society.
  6. The medal for The Flinders University of South Australia student shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of Medicine of The Flinders University of South Australia to the final year student in the course for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery who is judged on combined criteria relating to academic performance and contribution to the School of Medicine; The Flinders University of South Australia or the general community. Such contributions may include excellence in research and exceptional performance in a non-academic pursuit.
  7. No award shall be made under Clauses 5 and 6 above in a year if, in the opinion of the Association and the particular Dean, there is no student of sufficient merit.
  8. The process for selecting recipients of the AAM Student Medals is to including the following:
    (a) a general call for nominations which could include: a letter to all faculty members; forms in pigeon holes of students from the final year of the course; advertisement(s) in student publications; a post or email delivery of the nomination form to students from the final year of the course;
    (b) the nomination should, where possible, include a CV of the person nominated, with the signature of the person nominating and a seconder;
    (c) as a minimum the selection committee is to include the President of the AMA(SA) (or nominee), the Dean (or nominee) and a faculty member(s) of the University Medical School.
    In addition, the AMA(SA) strongly encourages a final year student to be invited to the selection committee, at the discretion of the Dean.

The Australian Red Cross (Park Avenues Branch) Prize in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Paramedic)

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Faculty of Health Sciences Examinations Board of the School of Medicine.
  • The prize shall consist of a book voucher to the value of $250. In the event of a tie, two prizes shall be awarded.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the second year student whose performance in the topic, HLTH2202 Pathophysiology of Body Systems - Cardiovascular System, is judged to be the best.

Bristol-Meyers Squibb Pharmaceuticals Prize in Pharmacology

  • The Bristol-Meyers Squibb Pharmaceuticals Prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Biomedical topics).
  • The value of the prize shall be determined from time to time by the Examinations Board, but shall not be less than $200.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student achieving the highest score in the assessment for the topic MMED3914 Human and Molecular Pharmacology.

Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia (CRANA) Prize

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Remote Health).
  • The value of the prize will be a plaque and a gift determined by CRANA.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student completing the Master of Remote Health Practice (Nurse Practitioner) whose overall academic record, performance in clinical reasoning in the remote context, and the clinical practicums of the intensive blocks are judged to be the best.
  • The prize will be presented by the President of CRANA at the annual CRANA conference.

CSIRO Prize in Nutrition and Dietetics

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Nutrition and Dietetics).
  • The value of the prize shall be a book or books to the value of $250.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student enrolled in the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics course whose performance in the research elective topic during the second year is judged to be the best.

Deane O Southgate Prize

  • The prize may be awarded annually to the group of BMBS students whose Rural Health project for topic MMED8230 Doctor, Community and Society 2, is judged to be the best.
  • The prize may be shared equally if more than one class group is so recommended.
  • The value of the prize will be no less than $150, the amount to be determined annually.
  • The prize will be awarded by the First and Second Year Examinations Board of the School of Medicine.

The Dean's Prize

  • The prize shall be awarded annually by the Examination Board of the School of Medicine (Year 3 and 4 BMBS).
  • The value of the prize shall be determined by the Dean each year, but shall not be less than $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student who has achieved the top combined aggregate mark in Years 3 and 4 of the BMBS course.

Dietitians Association of Australia (SA Branch) Prize in Nutrition and Dietetics (Bachelors Degree)

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Nutrition and Dietetics).
  • The value of the prize shall be a cheque to the value of $100.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics course whose overall academic record, performance in placements, and general contribution to the course are judged to be the best.

The Dr Nick McClure Memorial Prize in Enterprise Management

This prize has been established from contributions by family, friends, students and colleagues to commemorate Dr Nick McClure, a valued member of the lecturing staff of the Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) course from 1993 until his untimely death in 2002. Nick played a key role in developing the topic of Enterprise Management to its current standard of excellence and hence this prize is awarded in his honour. The following rules shall apply:

  • The Dr Nick McClure Memorial Prize in Enterprise Management may be awarded annually by the Biotechnology and Medical Sciences Examinations Board (herein after referred to as the Board).
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student who gains the highest mark in the topic BTEC4630 Enterprise Management.
  • No prize shall be awarded if in the opinion of the Board there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

Flinders University School of Medicine Alumni Prize

  • The prize shall be called the Flinders University School of Medicine Alumni Prize.
  • The value of the prize shall be a certificate and book.
  • The prize shall be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean of the School of Medicine in consultation with members of the executive of the Alumni Association.
  • Nominations for the prize may be made by members of the final year BMBS student body and by members of staff of the School of Medicine. Forms for this purpose will be circulated amongst the staff and students in October each year.
  • The aim of the prize is to encourage students to maintain their interest and investment in activities in the wider community. The prize shall be awarded to the final year BMBS student who is of good academic standing and who is judged to have made the most outstanding contribution in a field other than medicine. This may include community service, achievements in the arts, or sporting endeavours.
  • In the event that in any year there is more than one student of sufficient merit, the Dean may recommend that the award be made to more than one student.
  • No award shall be made if the Dean, together with members of the Executive of the Alumni Association deem that there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

The GlaxoSmithKline Prizes in the Neurosciences

  • Two prizes of $500 each may be awarded for the best undergraduate and postgraduate seminars in any branch of the neurosciences, presented to the Centre for Neuroscience.
  • The prizes may be awarded to students who: are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate course of study at any University; are members of the Flinders University Centre for Neuroscience at the time of presentation of the seminar; and have carried out the research presented in the seminar whilst a student or visiting scholar of Flinders University.
  • The prizes shall be awarded by the board of the appropriate school on the recommendation of the convener of the Centre for Neuroscience.
  • The postgraduate prize will be designated the GlaxoSmithKline Victor McFarlane Prize and the undergraduate prize will be designated the GlaxoSmithKline David Ovedoff Prize.

The HenderCare Award for Excellence in Nursing Care

  • The prize shall be known as The HenderCare Award for Excellence in Nursing Care.
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded to a nursing student completing the requirements of the first year of the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) program in the School of Nursing and Midwifery who demonstrates excellence in the theory as determined by their grade point average (GPA) and practice of nursing care as evidenced by their clinical reports.

Health Promotion Association of Australia (SA Branch) Prize

  • The prize will be awarded to the student who has gained the highest overall aggregate mark in the four Health Education/Health Promotion topics, which comprise the first and second year of the stream in the Bachelor of Health Sciences.
  • The prize will be awarded by the Bachelor of Health Sciences Examination board, on the recommendation of the coordinator of the Health Education/Health Promotion stream.
  • The prize will consist of full membership of the SA Branch of the Health Promotion Association for a period of one year and book voucher to the value of $50.

James and Jessie Brown Memorial Prizes in Gerontology

In celebration of the completion, in November 1992, of 100 years operating various South Australian charitable health services, predominantly for the aged and infirm, The James Brown Memorial Trust offers the following prizes in memory of its benefactors. The following rules shall apply to the James and Jessie Brown Memorial Prizes in Gerontology:

  • The James and Jessie Brown Memorial Prizes in Gerontology will be awarded annually by a selection panel, comprising the Chairperson of The James Brown Memorial Trust (or nominee), the Professor of Rehabilitation, Aged and Extended Care (or nominee) and a nominee of the Dean of Nursing with expertise in the field of gerontology or aged care.
  • The value of the prizes shall be determined from time to time by The James Brown Memorial Trust but shall not be less than $1,000 each.
  • One prize shall be awarded to a student enrolled within the graduate entry medical program (BMBS) or any other undergraduate or postgraduate program within the School of Medicine, and the other to a student enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate program within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • The prizes will be awarded to the students submitting, as part of their normal course requirements, the best pieces of written work of up to 5,000 words on a topic of relevance in the field of gerontology or aged care.

Jane Preston Memorial Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Jane Preston, a medical graduate, completed the Obstetrics and Gynaecology training program at Flinders and graduated Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in February 1991, aged 32. A few days later she was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1993, aged 34. In her memory, her family has donated funds to support an annual prize for a female student, enrolled in the final year of the BMBS course, who has achieved excellence in the study of obstetrics and gynaecology. The rules for the prize are as follows:

  • There shall be a fund known as the Jane Preston Memorial Fund.
  • The fund shall consist of a principal established by donations and such revenues as are received from the investment of that principal. The fund shall be open to subscriptions by the public and set up with the approval of the Australian Taxation Office.
  • The purposes of the fund are to award annually a prize which shall consist of a medal, a certificate, and a sum of money, and which shall be known as the Jane Preston Memorial Prize, to a female student enrolled in the final year of the BMBS course in the School of Medicine who has achieved excellence in the study of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • There shall be a committee appointed by the Council known as the Jane Preston Memorial Fund Committee which shall comprise the Vice-Chancellor (or nominee), the Dean of the School of Medicine (or nominee), and the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or nominee), save that at least one member of the committee shall be a woman. The functions of the committee shall be to receive annually
    (1)  a recommendation from the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine on the award of a prize;
    (2)  a report on the state of the fund. A copy of the report shall be made available to the main sponsor of the fund. If, on the advice of the Examinations Board, there is no student eligible to receive the prize in a particular year, no award shall be made. If a joint prize is to be awarded, each recipient shall be awarded a medal, a certificate and the full value of the prize.
  • The value of the prize shall be $300 on the first occasion offered. The real value of the prize shall be maintained by adjusting it commensurately with movements in the Consumer Price Index for Adelaide.
  • The fund shall be administered by the University Accountant and shall be invested at his or her discretion in securities or the like which are approved forms of investment for the general funds of the University.
  • The prize shall cease to be awarded if the fund is exhausted.
  • If the prize has been unable to be awarded for a period of five years, the committee shall so advise the Council which is empowered to alter the purposes of the fund as appropriate save that it shall always be applied for the purposes of a prize for an outstanding female student in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology which shall be known as the Jane Preston Memorial Prize.

Jillian Teubner Memorial Prize

Jillian Teubner's career at Flinders spanned 27 years. She was appointed as a Senior Demonstrater in Clinical Biochemistry in 1975 and, at the time of her death from cancer in 2002, she was Associate Professor in the Medical Education Unit of the School of Medicine. In this latter role, as Chairperson of the BMBS Admissions Committee, Jillian's work in designing and implementing the admissions process for the graduate entry medical course was of national and international significance. She was also responsible for recruiting international students to the medical course and took a particular interest in these students, welcoming them on their arrival in Australia, providing support and encouragement throughout their studies and maintaining contact with many of them after their graduation.

This prize has been established in Jillian's memory, from contributions by family, friends, students and colleagues. The following rules shall apply:

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Years 3 and 4 BMBS).
  • The value of the prize shall be determined from time to time by the Examinations Board, but shall not be less than $250.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the international student who has achieved the highest combined aggregate mark in Years 3 and 4 of the BMBS course.

The John Gladstone Sweeney Prize in Orthopaedics

Funds have been donated by the Orthopaedic Research Trust Fund established at the Flinders Medical Centre for an annual prize to encourage medical students to pursue an active academic interest in orthopaedics. The following rules will apply:

  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Third and Fourth year BMBS Examinations Board of the School of Medicine.
  • The value of the prize shall be $300.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student enrolled in the BMBS course whose performance in a special clinical viva examination in orthopaedics is judged to be the best.

Kathleen V Russell Prize in Neurobiology

The sum of $5,000 has been endowed to the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation for the establishment of an annual prize to encourage excellence in scholarships within the neurobiological sciences.

The following rules shall apply to the Kathleen V Russell Prize which the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation is to administer, as an affirmation of its interest in assisting researchers early in their education and training and throughout their professional careers:

  • The prize will be awarded annually to the honours or postgraduate student who, undertaking studies in any branch of the neurobiological sciences, has been judged competitively as showing the most promise in his or her particular field.
  • The value of the prize shall be $300.
  • The prize will be awarded by the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation on the recommendation of a special committee formed from members of the Centre for Neuroscience. Students nominated or nominating for this prize will have demonstrated innovation, originality and diligence over the duration of their research studies and will present a seminar to the Centre for Neuroscience which illustrates the significance of the ideas examined, the quality of the experimental work including the methodological and technical skills required, and the interpretation of their research findings in the context of those from other researchers.
  • The prize will be presented at the Annual General meeting of the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation in October of each year. The recipient will also receive a citation named the Kathleen V Russell Prize in Neurobiology, which will describe something of the reasons for the award and why this particular candidate was successful.
  • If in any year the prize is not awarded or the income from the endowment exceeds the amount of the prize, the value of such prize or excess income shall be added to the capital of the endowment fund.

The Michael Crotty Prize in Primary Health Care

This prize has been established from contributions by family, friends, students and colleagues to commemorate Michael Crotty, a Lecturer in the Department of Public Health and a member of the teaching staff of the Master of Primary Health Care course from 1989 to 1998.   • The Michael Crotty Prize in Primary Health Care shall be awarded annually by the Primary Health Examinations Board, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Public Health and the Coordinator of the Master of Primary Health Care course.

  • The value of each prize will $200.

Funds have been donated by the FMC Clinicians' Special Purpose Fund for an annual prize to recognise medical students' interest in neurology. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Women's Health Award

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has established an annual award in each medical school in Australia and New Zealand to recognise exceptional student achievement in Women's Health and Obstetrics and Gynaecology and to foster awareness of the specialty. The award at Flinders University will be presented at the BMBS Annual Qualifying ceremony, at the conclusion of the student's final year of study.

The award will be presented by a staff member (or academic status holder) of the University, who is also a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The following rules will apply to the award at Flinders University:

  • The award shall be called the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Women's Health Award.
  • The award shall be given by the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine (Years 3 and 4 BMBS), on the recommendation of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to a student who achieves excellence in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology/Women's Health component of the third year of the course, and who is not the recipient of any other award for Women's Health in the same year.
  • The award shall comprise $500 and a certificate.
  • If a joint prize is to be awarded, each recipient shall receive a certificate and an equal share of the prize money.

The School of Nursing & Midwifery HUB Research Prize

  • The prize shall be known as the School of Nursing & Midwifery HUB Research prize. Four awards will be made available annually from 2005.
  • The awards will be for $250 each and will be awarded to one student from each of the following topics: NURS1508 or MIDW2003 for undergraduate students; NURS9602, NURS9613, NURS9615 coursework masters programs of 9-unit, 18-unit and 36-unit projects respectively.
  • Any student enrolled full-time or part-time in the nominated topics is eligible for the award.
  • Topic coordinators of undergraduate students, or supervisors of postgraduate research topic students, will identify pieces of work that demonstrate a high level of excellence and are either a research study, or work that is research-based. The determination of excellence will be according to the assessment criteria for each topic. Once selected, permission will be sought from the student to submit the piece of work to the School of Nursing & Midwifery's Research Committee for final consideration.
  • The awards will be granted to the student in each category whose work best meets the following criteria: clear and concisely written; logical flow in argument; demonstrate a high level of understanding of research; potential for development of further research.

The Speech Pathology Association of Australia Prize

  • The Speech Pathology Association of Australia Prize shall be awarded annually by the SA Branch of the Association on the recommendation of the Examinations Board of the School of Medicine [BSpPath].
  • The value of the award will be equivalent to the fee set for graduate student members and will be used towards membership of the Association in the nominated year (or the following year if the winner has already renewed/joined the Association for the nominated year).

The US Endocrine Society Medical Student Achievement Award

The US Endocrine Society has established an annual award to encourage outstanding medical students to pursue careers in endocrinology and related fields of medicine and basic science. One award is to be offered in each medical school in Australia. The rules for the award at this University are as follows:

  • The award may be made annually by the First and Second Year BMBS Examinations Board of the School of Medicine, on the recommendation of the coordinator of the Endocrine and Reproductive Systems component of topic MMED8220A/B Knowledge of Health and Illness 2A/B.
