The Robert Allen Simpson Memorial Fund
The Robert Allen Simpson Memorial Fund was established through
the generosity of the family of the late Robert Allen Simpson. Mr
Simpson was a founding member of the Council from the inception
of Flinders University in 1966 until June 1980.
For most of that significant period in the formative years of the
University, Mr Simpson was a member of the Finance and Building
Committee. Prior to that, he was Chairman of the Finance and Buildings
Committee of the University of Adelaide from 1960 –- 1965
during which time initial planning for the establishment of Flinders
University was undertaken. Mr Simpson's expertise in the business
world was of great benefit to University in the roles in which he
served during its first 14 years. In a national context, Mr Simpson
had been a member of the Australian Universities Commission from
1965 - 1975.
In 1980 Flinders University conferred on Mr Simpson an honorary
degree, Doctor of Science honoris causa, in recognition of his contribution
to university education in Australia, and in particular for his
service to Flinders.
After Mr Simpson's death in 1996, his family gave a generous endowment
which enabled the establishment of the RA Simpson Memorial Fund
which has provided the University with the funds to award International
Scholarships, Rural Scholarships and the Science in the New Century
Scholarship.
