Use of the University name |
| |
In 1998, University Council
determined that the official name of the University, The
Flinders University of South Australia, should only
be used where the full name as defined by the University Act
is required, such as in legal documents. In all other cases,
the University is referred to simply as Flinders University.
The acronym FUSA is not used.
For branding purposes, the words Flinders University
Adelaide Australia are used in association with the
University crest (see below). However, this is not used in
any other context and is not an alternative in text to "The
Flinders University of South Australia". The acronym FUAA
is never used.
If it is necessary to identify where Flinders University is
located, this can be done using conventional narrative. When
writing for an international audience, staff and students
should be aware that readers may not understand that South
Australia is a designated State rather than a general region.
There is also the risk of confusion with the University of
South Australia. |

Use of the University crest |
| |
The crest is the University’s
insignia, as defined by Statute
1.2, and must be used in accordance with the guidelines
and approval procedures set out below, which are approved by
the Registrar. These guidelines cover use on publications, posters,
marketing materials and presentations support material and,
where appropriate, should be read in conjunction with the University's
Advertising, marketing and
publications guidelines. Separate guidelines apply to Business
cards and letterhead. |
| |
2.1 |
Guidelines for use |
| |
|
Only approved versions of the crest
provided by the University are to be used and all elements,
as provided, must be used. Hand-drawn approximations cannot
be used, even on internal publications. At all times the dimensions
and integrity of the crest must be maintained.
Specifications for the crest, including colours, are set out
on the Flinders Press website at http://www.flinders.edu.au/flinpress/crest.htm.
The crest may be reproduced in one of three ways:
- in full colour, using all designated colours
- using only the designated dark blue and yellow (where
a full colour range is not being used and/or it is not feasible
to use colour in the smaller areas of the crest)
- in black only – no other single colour may be used

2.1.2 |
Identification with the University
|
| |
|
|
Whenever it is used, the crest must be clearly
identified with the University. In most situations, it will
be used in conjunction with the words Flinders University Adelaide
Australia. The preferred option has the words underneath the
crest, as shown below. The second version, with the words set
to the right, may be used where appropriate to fit with a specific
design and/or complement other crests.
The crest may be used alone in printed documents (eg reports
or on forms) provided the words “Flinders University”
appear on the relevant page and there can be no doubt that the
crest is that of the University, not one of its component parts
such as a specific AOU. Similarly, it may be used for branding
purposes on Powerpoint pages and web sites, provided it is clearly
identified as the University’s crest on the title page.
The Director, Marketing and Communications Office should be
consulted if there are any doubts about how requirements apply
in individual circumstances. |
| |
2.2 |
Approval for use of the
crest |
| |
|
The Director, Marketing and Communications Office has delegated authority from the Registrar to
approve use of the crest.
Approval is required in the following circumstances. |
| |
|
2.2.1 |
Staff use |
| |
|
|
Academic staff need not seek formal approval
to use the crest on the following if they have the approval
of the Head of the relevant AOU: reports and other
publications directly related to their teaching, research
or consultancy work at and for the University
material used to support and/or promote presentations they
make as a member of the academic staff of the University,
and which deal with their work and/or area of recognised expertise
teaching notes and other course-related material provided
to their students
course promotional publications (provided any requirements
under the University’s Advertising,
marketing and publications guidelines are met)
work-related web material
flyers and other material intended primarily for use within
the University.
Similarly, general staff need not seek formal approval if
they have the approval of their Head of Division or Unit to
use the crest on:
internal documents, including forms
reports and other publications prepared on behalf of the
University, whether for internal or external use.
Approval must be sought from the Director, Marketing and Communications Office in all other cases. This includes use
of the crest with the logos of other organisations on material
relating to joint projects. In some circumstances, approval
can be sought for general rather than once-only use. |
| |
|
2.2.2 |
Student use |
| |
|
|
Use of the crest by undergraduate students
is discouraged and usually is only approved where a staff member
wishes to highlight the University’s involvement with
a project carried out for, or in conjunction with, an external
organisation. In each case, the staff member must seek approval
from the Director, Marketing and Communications Office on the
student’s behalf.
There is broader scope for the use of the crest by postgraduate
students, particularly where it would enhance the credibility,
and thus value, of material sent to external organisations or
individuals as a legitimate part of a student’s course
or research. In each case, a relevant academic staff member
must seek approval from the Director, Marketing and Communications Office. This includes use of the crest on reports commissioned
by external organisations as part of a student’s work. |
| |
|
2.2.3 |
External use |
| |
|
|
No external person or organisation may use
the Flinders University crest without the written approval,
in hard copy or by email, of the Director, Marketing and Communications Office. This includes use by graphic design and
printing companies, irrespective of any approval given by other
Flinders University staff or students. |
| |
2.3 |
Obtaining / providing copies
of the crest |
| |
|
Flinders Press has delegated authority
to provide the crest on the University’s behalf to internal
and approved external users, including liaising with external
users to ensure their requirements are met.
Flinders Press will not provide the crest to any individual
or organisation other than a staff member without written permission
from the Director, Marketing and Communications Office. Permission
will automatically be emailed to Flinders Press as part of the
formal approval process.
Staff should not directly provide the crest to external organisations,
including graphic designers or printers. It is also important
that staff do not accept an external organisation’s claim
to already have a copy of the crest. To ensure the quality and
integrity of what is used, it is important that Flinders Press
provides an approved version in each case or is sure that an
approved version already has been provided.
Approved copies of the crest may be shared within AOUs or divisions,
for use in line with the above guidelines. |
