
The Animal Welfare Act, 1985
This act governs the operation of animal ethics committees in South Australia and the use of animals in research and teaching. Appended to it, and therefore having the force of law, is the NHMRC Code of Practice (see below)
NHMRC Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
The Code of Practice provides in detail for the principles to be observed in the use of animals for research and teaching, the role and functions of animal ethics committees, responsibilities of researchers and teachers, acquisition and care of animals, and so on. A detailed bibliography is provided. In addition to the Code of Practice, the NHMRC website includes a number of other useful references, policies and guidelines relating to animal welfare matters.

The Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching provides very extensive information on matters relating to animal welfare. Available from their site are Facts Sheets on matters relating to pain and pain control, the care and handling of many types of animal used in research and teaching, experimental techniques, quarantine and statistical issues.
