Animal Welfare Committee

The Flinders University Animal Welfare Committee (AWC) is responsible for considering and approving all teaching and research activities which involve the use of animals, which are defined as any live non-human vertebrate, that is:

  • fish
  • amphibians
  • reptiles
  • birds
  • mammals.

This definition encompasses:

  • domestic animals
  • purpose-bred animals
  • livestock
  • wildlife
  • cephalopods (such as octopus and squid).

The AWC also advises on policy for the use of animals in teaching and research.

The committee is established under the SA Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and operates in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, 2004.

Applications to the AWC are submitted through one of its two sub-committees:

Animal Ethics Research Ethics Sub-Committee (School of Medicine) 

Applications from researchers in the Faculty of Health Sciences go to the School of Medicine Animal Ethics Research Sub-Committee, through its Secretary, Peggy Kincaid, phone (08) 8204 4488.

Animal Welfare Sub-Committee (School of Biology)

Applications from researchers in the Faculty of Science and Engineering go to the Biological Sciences Animal Welfare Sub-Committee through its Secretary Kylie Sappiatzer, phone (08) 8201 3130.
