The Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century (Science21) works to support decision-making in science education by policy makers, educational leaders, industry and others. Through helping to ensure that the available evidence informs today's decisions we aim to future-proof Australia and young Australians against a world increasingly influenced by scientific and technological change. Through this approach Science21 will aid individuals and the wider community to best prepare for social and economic prosperity.
Science21 focuses on interactions with three sectors - policy makers, industry and educational leaders. We use these definitions in their broadest senses. For example, educational leaders include district directors, administrators, coordinators and teachers who innovate to any extent within science education.
Science21 is part of Flinders University but sits outside of the normal departmental structure, administratively residing within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. This allows the Centre to draw on links and collaborations across the university, in particularly with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the School of Education. This structure allows Science21 to maintain a degree of independence and responsiveness to decision makers - key factors contributing to the success of the Centre.
Science21 is funded by the South Australian State Government with the objective of helping to:
