Terms of reference

Role of the Committee

The Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee will:

  • advise the Faculty on strategic directions for improving teaching and learning and develop and oversee the implementation of policies for teaching and learning within the Faculty of Science and Engineering that will raise the profile of this activity and lead to improved standards and outcomes for students;
  • identify and take action to address issues that arise, for example through the annual reports on teaching and learning prepared by the University, in accordance with the Key Accountability Measures and other evaluations of teaching and learning employed by the University and Faculty;
  • gather and disseminate information about good teaching practice and encourage the adoption of such practices to improve the student learning experience;
  • develop and promote opportunities for staff development in relation to teaching and learning that enhance the quality of teaching.

Membership

Ex-Officio members

  • Associate Head: Teaching and Learning (Chair)
  • Chairs of each of the Schools' Teaching and Learning Committees
  • Director, Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century
  • Faculty General Manager or delegate

Members invited by the Chair

  • Academic staff member from the School of Education at Flinders University
  • External person, for example from Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology
  • Two members of academic staff who demonstrate an interest in teaching and learning
  • One student enrolled in the Faculty

Members invited by the Chair will normally serve for a term of two years, but may be invited to serve a further term.

The student representative will serve for a one year term and may be invited to serve a further term.

Executive support to be provided by the Manager, Quality Assurance

Mode of operation

The Committee will normally meet 9 times per year.

Working Groups

The Committee will receive reports from Working Groups it establishes to deal with the administration of policies and strategic priorities. Membership for Working Groups will be drawn from academic staff within the Faculty.

The following Working Groups will be established:

Teaching and Learning Grants
This group will promote and support applications for External and University grants and awards including:

  • ALTC grants and awards
  • Vice-Chancellors Teaching Excellence Award
  • Teaching and Learning Innovation Grants

The group will also consider applications for Executive Dean's Teaching and Learning grants and awards including;

  • Teaching Excellence Award
  • Teaching and Learning Innovation Grants
  • Grants for development of Schools/Community outreach resources

The group will seek to increase external funding for teaching and learning by identifying external grants, for example Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) grants, promoting these within the faculty and supporting the development of applications.

This group will be chaired by the Associate Head: Teaching and Learning and comprise two members of the Committee and one academic staff drawn from the previous recipients of Teaching Excellence awards. It will have executive support provided by the Faculty Office.

Honours

This group will be responsible for administration of the University policy on Honours across the Faculty and will seek to develop effective procedures for the implementation of policy including the requirement to undertake benchmarking with other institutions.
It will be Chaired by a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee and comprise the Honours Coordinators within each School and have executive support provided by the Faculty Office.

Transition to University

This group will be chaired by the Associate Head: Teaching and Learning and comprise three academic staff drawn from first year teaching across the Faculty who have a commitment to and interest in transition and two general staff members from the Faculty Office, one of whom will provide executive assistance. This group will have overall responsibility for the development and implementation of transition to university activities including O'Week and other activities designed to meet identified needs of commencing students.

Educational Information and Communication Technology Advisory Group (EdICT)

This Group will be chaired by the ICT Manager (Online Learning & Web Development), and comprise one academic from each of the three AOUs, the University's Director: Education ICT and have executive support provided by the Faculty. The group will advise and make recommendations to TLC in relation to the educational use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and monitor the use of existing and new technologies, and advise on their impact. Executive support will be provided by the Faculty Office.

Additional Working Groups will be established when necessary to implement strategic priorities identified by the Faculty in the area of teaching and learning.
