High schools and teachers

The Faculty has a well-established program of teaching support and other activities for high schools. We offer workshops which are designed to give high school students practical insights into science and engineering, and help them develop aspirations for further study, as well as offering professional development for science and related discipline teachers.

The Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century (Science21) is a dedicated centre for both practical engagement with local teachers, and research into science teacher development. It has very strong links with schools and teachers around Australia. The centre has helped create a Year 12 Science and Maths Academy at Flinders. This is a collaborative venture between Flinders and a number of local high schools; and enhances and supports the teaching of Stage 2 year 12 Physics, Chemistry and Specialist Mathematics. It is closely aligned with pathways to university.

Community research projects

A number of research groups in the Faculty are involved in various community projects. For example:
  • a support network for primary school science teachers
  • urban planning in the City of Onkaparinga
  • a mobile robotics lab for local schools
  • commercial research with local businesses in the food and wine industry

These projects are coordinated and funded by the Southern Knowledge Transfer Partnership.
