HELPP (Healthy Eating Local Policies and Programs) was a State Government funded project led by Nutrition & Dietetics Flinders University, to assist organisations to develop and implement healthy eating policies and improve food literacy in their communities.
After three years (2011-2013) the project met its objectives and finished. However the work still continues and materials, programs and healthy eating policy resources and case studies are available for any organisation wanting to work in this area.
Good nutrition is essential throughout life to promote good health and to prevent chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and associated risk factors such as overweight and obesity.
Around 60% of South Australian adults and nearly a quarter of South Australian children are overweight or obese.
Eating more fruit and vegetables and replacing sugary drinks with water are two effective strategies along with eating healthily overall which can assist with maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of chronic diseases developing.
Local governments and community organisations also play a crucial role in creating supportive healthy eating environments. They can encourage community members to eat healthily by developing healthy eating policies and delivering food literacy programs that support good nutrition.
