Why provide healthy catering?

It is essential that catered functions (including all situations where food and drink is served) model the key nutrition messages of the Eat for Health Australian Dietary Guidelines and your organisations' values regarding nutrition, the promotion of a healthy weight and responsible alcohol consumption.

5 tips for healthy catering

The menu for all functions should:

include a variety of foods including plenty of plant based foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans and chickpeas) and grain

based foods (preferably wholegrain) such as breakfast cereals, bread, pasta, noodles and rice.

   include vegetarian options
include moderate amounts of lean meats, skinless poultry, fish and reduced fat dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt)
limit saturated fat (e.g. replace butter with unsaturated margarine)
always include water (tap, mineral or soda water). Other drinks such as tea and coffee and 100% fruit juice can also be provided.

Handy hint: Look at the foods you are serving. Is there plenty of colour? If not, add more fruit and vegetables.
