Alison Russell

Alison  is a speech pathologist who teaches in specialty area of voice and voice disorders as well as in the professional practice topics.  In addition to teaching, she specialises in the management of children and adults with voice disorders, and has a particular interest in voice use and voice care for teachers.

Another area of interest is the use of multi-media in teaching. She has been involved in the development of three CD ROMs and a video.   The first CD, A Sound Judgement, was developed with Jenni Oates from LaTrobe University.  It is designed to teach students to make perceptual judgements about disordered voices.

The second CD, The Dynamic Swallow, was the initiative of Ingrid Scholten and was developed at Flinders.  It is designed to assist the learner understand the physiology of the normal swallow and the consequences of dysfunction.

The third CD, Open Wide, is a joint project with Ingrid Scholten and Paul McCormack.  The CD is designed to teach students the basic information required to perform an orofacial examination. 

Voice Care for Teachers is an educational video designed to provide teachers with basic information about the anatomy and physiology of the voice and the principles of voice care.  It was produced in collaboration with Jenni Oates from La Trobe University, and Celeica Pemberton from Royal prince Alfred Hospital, and was funded in part by the Australian Occupational Safety Trust. Alison also regularly presents to teachers about Voice Care.

Research interests include all aspects of voice and voice disorder, with a particular interest in the assessment, management and prevention of voice disorders in teachers.  Alison completed her PhD  with her thesis entitled "Voice Problems in Teachers: Prevalence and Prediction".

Alison is the current Course Coordinator, Chair of the Admissions Committee and departmental representative on the School of Medicine Education Information Technology Committee and the Faculty International Programs Committee.
