
Karen Sparrow
BA, MSc, MAudSA (CCP)
Karen has worked as a clinical audiologist both in South Australia and in Germany for over 20 years specializing in hearing aid rehabilitation. She completed a Masters of Science by research in 1995/96 in Western Australia at Curtin University of Technology. Her research investigated the effectiveness of communication strategy training with adult cochlear implantees.
Karen returned to Adelaide in 1999 and began teaching clinical skills part time in the Master of Audiology program at Flinders in 2001. In addition in 2002 she became involved in the development of a clinic, Flinders University Hearing Services. Since mid 2005 Karen has been a fulltime staff member at Flinders as Lecturer in Audiology. She coordinates the clinical placements for the Masters in Audiology program and through Flinders University Hearing Services has a strong involvement in clinical teaching.
Karen’s main research and clinical interest is aural rehabilitation for adults with acquired hearing loss, including outcome measures for hearing aid users, speech in noise tests and analysis of conversation breakdown and repair. Over the past 4 years Karen has worked with Associate Professor Linnett Sanchez in running a yearly clinical trip with to the APY lands in far northern South Australia. The aim of these trips has been to assess indigenous ear disease in school age children with the assistance of primarily audiology and speech pathology students across the aboriginal communities in this area.
