Bachelor of Speech Pathology

Bachelor of Speech Pathology is a four year full-time course in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Unfortunately, the course is not offered in distance mode.

It is a professional degree leading to a qualification to practise as a Speech Pathologist. This qualification is recognised by Speech Pathology Australia, the Speech Language and Hearing Association (Singapore),and the New Zealand Speech Therapy Association. Speech Pathology Australia has recently signed a mutual recognition agreement with the USA, Canada and the UK. Subject to meeting the requirements of those countries (eg exams), speech pathologists who study in Australia will be recognised to practice in those countries.

The intake for the Bachelor of Speech Pathology program is approximately 35 students each year, including up to 5 international students. Small class sizes provide the opportunity for students to get to know each other and the academic staff very quickly. This also allows the staff to identify any areas of difficulty a student may be having, and to offer additional individual or small group tutorials to help overcome these difficulties.

Speech Pathology is a varied course and therefore is appealing to students from a wide range of backgrounds (including science, education, arts). Detailed information about the topics can be found in the University Calendar.

Students have an opportunity to have extensive clinical experience, allowing them to integrate theory with practice and to develop the skills necessary to become a Speech Pathologist. The clinical experience is organised into weekly and 2 block placements (6-8 weeks of intensive clinical work), and these block placements are offered within Adelaide, in country areas of South Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory, and in some circumstances could be conducted overseas.

There is an active speech pathology and audiology student association which organises fundraising and social events. FUSPAA is a member of the University's Clubs and Societies.
