Senior clinical audiologist: Karen Sparrow, Lecturer in Audiology, BA, MSc MAudSA(CCP). Karen has over 20 years experience in clinical audiology and hearing aid fitting both in South Australia and overseas.

When should you have a hearing test?
ARE YOU EXPERIENCING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING?
- Difficulty understanding speech in quiet situations.
- Difficulty understanding speech in background noise.
- Needing the television or radio volume higher than other family members.
- Friends or family complaining that you don’t hear them.
- Difficulty hearing in one ear.
- Hearing loudly enough but not clearly. You think other people are mumbling.
- Experiencing a constant ringing or buzzing sound in your ears.
If YES, then a hearing assessment is recommended!
WHAT HAPPENS AT A HEARING ASSESSMENT??
- The consulting audiologist will ask a number of questions about your hearing/ your child’s hearing, ears and medical history.
- Ear canals and ear drums will then be inspected using an otoscope.
- Precise instructions will be given for the hearing test.
- Headphones will be placed over the ears and you will listen for tones at low volume levels and indicate whenever a tone is heard. This is played as a game for children.
- Further testing of speech in quiet or embedded in noise may follow.
- Mobility of the ear drums and middle ear may also be measured

- Regular reviews and ongoing care following the initial hearing aid fitting
Hearing aids are provided privately by FUHS - NOT under the current Commonwealth Government Office of Hearing Services voucher scheme.

- Behind-the-Ear, Open slim tube Behind-the-Ear, In-the-Ear, In-the-Canal, Completely-in the-Canal
- Technology levels include basic digital, medium digital, advanced and premium advanced digital.
- All makes and models from a wide range of hearing aid manufacturers are available and selected to suit the individual.
FUHS can also advise on the use of ALDs – assistive listening devices. For example FMsystems.
