The course provides further study opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor of Speech Pathology and for teachers seeking to upgrade their knowledge and skills in a specialised area.

The course is professionally-oriented and is intended for people currently employed in speech pathology, education, or special education.

Students undertaking the Graduate Certificate will

* achieve an in-depth knowledge in a specialised area
* be able to access and evaluate current research pertinent to the area of specialisation
* be able to reflect critically on their own learning and different approaches to practice
* develop knowledge and skills which can be applied to their area of practice
* develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach within the area of specialty

In 2006 the specialised area is School Age Language (5 to 12) years.

The course combines coursework delivered in a mix of workshops and on-line learning activities. It is expected that students will meet together for one intensive at the beginning of each Semester and Topic.

How do I apply?

Application forms can be downloaded at the Admissions Office webpage, dowload the Admissions to Postgraduate Coursework form.

When do I have to enroll by?

Enrollment for Topic One is officially by 24th February 2006, however later enrollments can be negotiated with the course co-coordinator.

What is the minimum amount of study expected in the course?

The course has three topics, each being 6 points.This translates roughly to an equivalent of 12 hours study per week . Your study guide will provide you with a structure to follow for activities, assignments and readings.

What are the aims and objectives of topic one?

Topic one has three specific aims:

  1. To facilitate for students, a broad understanding of the current theories, methodology and research in the area of school age language and literacy.
  2. To create a shared understanding of terminology, concepts and practice that enable a meaningful and stimulating dialogue between students on practical issues and theories relating to school age language in speech pathology and education.
  3. To foster thinking practices in students that stimulates critical questions about methodology and practice in literature and in the workplace.

Objectives

On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

* demonstrate an understanding of current theories and research related to school age language and literacy.
* appreciate the roles that speech pathologists and teachers have in facilitating language and literacy skills for school age children.
* collaborate with each other to formulate questions and responses that critically discuss clinical questions related to workplace practice.
* present a report that identifies an area of interest related to school age language that will be researched in Topic SPTH 8002.
