The Arthur Keain Awards
The late Arthur Keain, who was a Senior Administrative
Officer in the Central Administration from 1964 until
his death in 1970, bequeathed the sum of $2,000 to
the University. In 1980 the Council applied this bequest
to the establishment of the Arthur Keain Staff Development
Awards.
Applications for the 2008 awards close on
Friday 4th April. Please forward to the
Staff Development and Training Unit by 5.00pm.
Award Rules
(1) The purpose of the Awards is to enhance the professional
development of members of the general staff of the
University who wish to undertake a development activity
which can be demonstrated to be of benefit to them
in the performance of their University duties.
(2) Awards shall be made to assist with the costs
of travel, accommodation, or course fees, or any other
associated expenditure, and must be expended within
the year of the award.
(3) Applications will be called for once per annum
in February for programs to be undertaken in that
year. While it is appreciated that all aspects may
not have been finalised, applicants will be required
to give sufficient detail of the proposed program,
and its relevance to them in the performance of their
University duties. All members of the general staff
are eligible to apply.
(4) Normally a total of $2,000 will be available
each year. General staff will be invited to apply
for individual awards of no greater than $1,000.
(5) Applications will be considered by a committee
comprising the Director of Administration and Registrar
or nominee (convener), two staff members of the University
nominated by the Single Bargaining Unit (one male
and one female and from different areas of the University),
and the Head of the Staff Development and Training
Unit.
The selection committee will have the power to consult
additional persons if, in the opinion of a member
of the committee, this is necessary to ensure that
an application receives informed assessment.
(6) Each applicant for an Award shall provide all
relevant information about the activities which the
staff member wishes to undertake (including an estimate
of costs) and a statement of the expected benefits
which are relevant to the staff member's University
duties. Each application shall be submitted through
the staff member's immediate supervisor and the senior
officer of the Unit concerned (eg. Head of Academic
Organisational Unit, Divisional Head). The supervisor
and senior officer should indicate their level of
support for the application and comment on the application
including the expected benefits to the staff member
and the University. The senior officer should also
indicate the contribution by the cost centre, in cases
where more than a $1,000 award is required.
(7) When the development activity is completed the
award recipients will provide a brief written report
on the activity to the Staff Development and Training
Unit.
(8) Any period of absence from duty to take up an
Award shall be on special leave with pay up to a maximum
of two weeks.
