Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your appointment to a position at Flinders University and to welcome you to Flinders if this is your first position here. If you are returning to Flinders after an absence from the University, welcome back.
When you begin a new role, or first begin at a new place of work there is a large amount of information with which you need to become familiar. Our induction process is intended to make your transition as smooth as possible.
Flinders University aims to provide a rewarding and supportive working environment for its entire staff. We have developed an excellent set of policies, conditions and provisions and the induction program and materials prepared for new staff are designed to help you become familiar with the University as a whole and with your particular working area as quickly and easily as possible.
I look forward to meeting you in person during the coming months.
Professor Michael N Barber FAA
Vice-Chancellor
Induction at Flinders
Key elements of Induction include the following:
Guide for New Staff Members
The purpose of this guide is to outline the induction process and to give you, or direct you to, the basic information you are most likely to need in your first weeks and months at Flinders. You should receive this guide upon your arrival at Flinders, or it can be downloaded here (PDF format).
Your
Supervisor
Your supervisor is responsible for making sure you get the information and support you require to be able to perform your role. Your supervisor may provide all of the information themselves, or nominate a colleague to assist. When you were appointed, your supervisor received a copy of The Supervisor’s Handbook. Thiscontains information designed to assist in the process of inducting new staff members. There is also a website containing information for Supervisors of New Staff Members.
Occupational
Health and Safety Unit
The Occupational Health and Safety Unit coordinates the management of health and safety measures at the University and the Occupational Health and Safety Information brochure outlines the services provided. There is an Occupational Health and Safety Induction Checklist in the Appendix section of the New Staff Guide. You and your supervisor must both read and sign it. Your supervisor will retain the checklist. Your supervisor will also ensure that you receive health and safety information specific to your workplace.
Human Resources Requirements
The Human Resources Division requires staff to:
- Meet with HR Advisor/Senior HR Adviser
In the first few days of employment, new staff are required to meet with their HR Adviser/Senior HR Adviser, to verify their employment at Flinders (e.g. show required documents).
- Attend an Employment Conditions Workshop (Induction)
When meeting with their HR Adviser/Senior HR Adviser, new staff should arrange to attend an Employment Conditions Workshop (Induction). These short workshops run every three weeks and provide important information on employment conditions such as leave, pay and entitlements, and about your obligations as an employee. You can contact HR Client Services for more information or to register on ext. 13875.
Orientation Workshops
A number of short orientation workshops are available for new staff. New Staff will be invited to these by the Staff Development and Training Unit, soon after their employment at Flinders.
The workshops cover:
Training for Supervisors
The University recognises that to enhance supervisors’ understanding and capacity to undertake the breadth of their responsibilities, appropriate supervisor training courses should be provided and undertaken. This is formally reflected in the Policy on Supervisors . For newly appointed supervisors, the expectation is that this training will be completed within the first six months of appointment, which would normally be the probation term, or within such other period as specified in the staff member’s contract of employment. Supervisors who believe their recent training/experience should be taken into account in determining whether they are required to undertake this training, should first discuss this with their supervisor who, if he/she believes it is appropriate that the staff member’s training/experience be recognised, should forward a brief recommendation and supporting statement to the Cost Centre Head for approval.
