Policies, Procedures and Information You Need to Know
|
There is a wide range of University policies, procedures and information
with which you will need to become familiar. The following highlights
some of the policies and procedures that may be relevant to new staff.
A comprehensive listing of policies is available in the University's
Policies and Procedures Manual.
A handbook outling the basic components of planning and quality assurance at Flinders.
This is the University's strategic planning document, outlining the University's goals and objectives.
A comprehensive, online manual of information, ranging from student and staff-related policies to research, finance, administration and governance.
This is a key University document which all new staff need to know about. If you are academic staff, you need to be aware of how these policies impact on your teaching and research.
The University is very active in ensuring that it provides a safe place to work. If there is a health and safety issue you come across, you should discuss it with your supervisor. If your workplace has particular hazards, these should be explained to you. For more information, contact the Occupational Health and Safety Unit on ext. 1 3024, or visit their website.
The University is committed to providing an environment where students and staff are able to study and work effectively, without fear of unlawful discrimination or harassment. The University’s Equal Opportunity Policy covers the full range of diversity issues, both in employment and education. For more information, contact the Equal Opportunity Unit on ext. 1 3735, or visit their website.
You need to be aware of your obligations in relation to Copyright.
The University is committed to the principles of openness, accuracy, accountability and responsibility which underpin the Freedom of Information Act.
The University has certain rights under common law and by statute to ownership regarding intellectual property created by staff, whether by members of the academic staff or the general staff, in the course of their employment.
Permission is required to bring alcohol on campus. An application form must be completed for this purpose.
Smoking is prohibited in all workplaces within the University. Please ask your supervisor about the local designated smoking area if necessary.
It is important that you are aware of the emergency evacuation procedures that are in place for your safety, in the event of a fire or similar emergency in a University building. Make yourself familiar with the exit routes from the buildings you use regularly, and get to know who the local Wardens and First Aid Officers are. Wardens are trained to handle emergencies and have the authority to direct persons at all levels to comply with emergency procedures.
The ALERT tone (beep beep) is a signal to prepare to leave the building by securing confidential materials and switching off computers/electrical appliances. The EVACUATE tone (woop woop) is a signal to leave the building via the nearest and safest exit, or as directed by a Warden, and go to the local assembly point. Do not use the lifts, and do not enter the building until the ‘all clear’ is given by the Chief Warden.
To contact emergency services from an internal phone, dial 0 000, then notify Security on 1 2880.

An academic profile describes the range of activities which an academic staff member could be expected to be involved in, and provide evidence of, in each of the four areas of academic activity: teaching, research and creative activity, administration (including service to the University) and professional performance (including service to the community).
New academic staff need to know how this operates in the AOU and the link with the Academic Performance Review Scheme.
If staff are required to travel for the University, they should consult the policy on Travel, Accommodation and Subsistence.
