RESEARCH AT FLINDERS

INTRODUCTION

Research activity at Flinders impacts on the whole University community in a number of ways. In particular, part of the University’s funding comes from how well we perform in research activities such as getting research grants and publishing work.

As well as the importance of research to the University, for the majority of academic staff at Flinders, research makes up about one-third of their job. Therefore, it is vital to understand the various research structures at Flinders and, if you are an academic, where to go for help in establishing or maintaining your research career. The key research structure most staff will need to know about is the Office of Research. Faculties also provide some research-related assistance. It is also essential that you read the booklet entitled Getting your Research Going at Flinders University.

STRUCTURES

Office of Research

The Office of Research is responsible for assisting with, and submitting research grant applications, research ethics, and research data for the University and administering research contracts. They are also a resource for new researchers with questions about research structure and process at Flinders University. They also distribute details of funding opportunities to the University research community.

Faculties

Faculties are responsible for administering conference leave funding and outside study leave schemes for academic staff. For more information, contact your Faculty Office. Your Faculty is usually the first point of contact for obtaining small amounts of funding to start your research program (e.g. establishment grants). They are also responsible for Research Student Maintenance (money to assist research higher degree students). Contact the staff member in your Faculty who is responsible for research administration.

Areas of Strategic Research Investment (ASRIs)

Areas of Strategic Research Investment (ASRIs) are a strategic research initiative of the University. ASRIs are the focus for projecting Flinders’ research capability to engage stakeholders, including business, government and the community. It is an initiative through which the University targets a significant funding investment in order to enable career researchers at Flinders to more effectively compete for both traditional and non-traditional sources of research funding. ASRIs are therefore designed to be multidisciplinary-based, and in some cases multi-faculty based, to enable researchers to expand the horizons of their own research and collaborate with researchers from other disciplines who are working in similar areas.  The ASRI system aims to foster cooperation and collaboration between Flinders researchers while at the same time providing them with a strong base from which to compete for research funding.
