COLLOQUIUM 2003
Foundations of University Teaching Programs: Pedagogy,
Impact and Logistics
April 10-11, 2003 at Flinders University
This latter initiative began as collaboration
between Flinders University and the University of Western Australia
(UWA).
The first stages involved a critical investigation the
current research on
the impact of programs that prepare of new academics
for teaching by Dr Janice Orrell from Flinders University
and
Dr
Allan Goody
from UWA. The results of this review were presented at
a workshop at the 2002 HERDSA Conference in Perth, following
which the
collaboration has expanded to include over 70 subscribers
to a list-server
moderated by Kathryn Sutherland out of Victoria University
of Wellington
in NZ and the development of a website managed by Staff Development & Training Unit at Flinders University.
The latest development has been a highly successful colloquium
attended by 45 academics representing 29 universities
(including 4 New Zealand and 1 Canada). The colloquium
was hosted
by Flinders University together with UWA with input from
the
University
of Adelaide (Ursula McGowan) and the University of South
Australia (Margaret Hicks).
The colloquium
program began with a broad focus
on the national and institutional context that is a major motivation
for the
growth of such programs
in Australian Universities as well as those abroad.
Despite their increase, there has been little in the way of
reference
between
programs regarding inclusions or collaboration in
the development of resources. Evaluations of their impact
on educational
quality have remained largely within single institutions
and have provided
little evidence of their impact beyond participant
positive satisfaction with the programs.
