Australian National University
The Foundations of University Teaching and Learning is an intensive professional development course for ANU academics. It introduces ideas and practices relevant to teaching in the ANU context through six inter-connected workshops.
Bond University
Foundations of University Learning and Teaching is a 10-credit point subject offered at the postgraduate certificate level as a professional development opportunity for new academic staff at Bond University. It is run over one semester.
Charles Sturt University
Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) is a program of professional development workshops and activities designed for new teaching staff at CSU.
Curtin University of Technology
The Foundations of Learning and Teaching program is for any fulltime or sessional teaching staff, and particularly those who are new or less experienced teachers. Each module is designed to support participants in the achievement of specific learning outcomes.
Deakin University
The Graduate Certificate of Higher Education is designed to meet the requirements for credentialing tertiary teaching for academic staff. Such credentials are becoming increasingly valued across the higher education sector, both in Australia and internationally.
Edith Cowan University
Edith Cowan University requires all new academic staff to participate in professional development relating to university teaching and learning.
Flinders University
The Flinders Foundation of University Teaching (FFOUT) program has been developed in line with the University's principles and policy framework for education, teaching and learning. The program will enable all recently appointed academics, especially those who are new to university teaching, to gain a better understanding of the various requirements of Flinders University in relation to teaching and learning. The Program is open to all academic staff who wish to develop their teaching skills.
James Cook University
Foundations of Teaching at JCU is a package that needs to be undertaken during the first year of employment by all newly appointed full-time teaching staff new to university teaching. Attendance is required as a condition of probation.
La Trobe University
Effective Teaching for Higher Learning: Practical, Research-based Strategies is a 3-day workshop that provides La Trobe academic staff with practical, research-based strategies and techniques to make teaching, assessing, and giving feedback both more effective in promoting higher learning for students and more efficient and rewarding for staff.
Macquarie University
The Foundations in Learning and Teaching (FILT) program aims to provide Macquarie staff who are either new to teaching, or who want to explore aspects of teaching and learning practice, with the knowledge and skills to enable them to operate as effective teachers. The theoretically based program will offer a practical, interactive and experiential approach to assist participants in their teaching at Macquarie.
Monash University
Foundation Program: Introduction to university teaching is a three day intensive program for all academic staff, designed to provide a sound understanding of what is required to teach effectively in Monash University. Issues to be covered include research-led teaching, cross-cultural communication, student evaluation of learning and teaching, aligning objectives to assessment, diversity issues and much more. The program is particularly recommended to staff new to Monash; experienced staff who wish to update their skills and sessional staff.
Queensland University of Technology
The QUT Foundations of University Teaching is designed for academic staff who are new to teaching in tertiary education. It provides opportunities to find out more about effective teaching and assessment strategies that help to maximise students' learning outcomes.The program is designed for academic staff with less than two years' full-time teaching experience. Sessional academic staff are also welcome to attend.
Southern Cross University
The Foundations of University Teaching is designed for all newly appointed teaching staff and current teachers who have not yet taken part. The program is designed to introduce new SCU teachers to learning and teaching at SCU.
Swinburne University of Technology
Graduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching (Higher Education) aims to enhance teaching and learning practice through reflection and the exploration of educational theories. Successful completion of the first unit also meets the related probation requirement of Swinburne University. Ongoing and contract teaching staff new to both Swinburne and teaching are expected, according to employment guidelines, to complete the unit LTS501 The Practice of Learning and Teaching in the first 12 months of their appointment.
University of Adelaide
The Teaching @ University course focuses on learning and teaching at the University of Adelaide. The course is designed for staff teaching, or intending to teach, in a university. Teaching @ University courses are open to all academic staff at the University of Adelaide. A Certificate of Completion is one of the requirements for confirmation of tenure or promotion.
University of Canberra
The Tertiary Teaching and Learning is intended for two groups of staff:
- those formally enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Tertiary Teaching where it is the first and compulsory unit; and
- newly appointed full-time continuing and part-time continuing academic staff withless than two years teaching experiencewho are completingthe TertiaryTeaching and Learning programas a mandatory requirement of probation.
University of Melbourne
The Melbourne Teaching Certificate (MTC) is a cohort-based short course offered by the Centre for the Study of Higher Education for teaching staff of the University of Melbourne. This course caters both to staff new to the University and to those seeking structured discussion and review of teaching.
University of New South Wales
The Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) program for UNSW teaching staff consists of an intensive five-day workshop and follow-up activities embedded in participants teaching practice. The FULT program targets teaching staff with little experience of teaching in higher education. The program is free for all UNSW staff with a current teaching role.
University of South Australia
The University of South Australia has offered a Graduate Certificate in Education (University Teaching) from the beginning of 2007. For University of South Australia academic staff (Levels A - C) the Graduate Certificate is mandated as a condition of probation for all new continuing academic staff and staff on fixed term contracts greater than 3 years (who are employed as of 1 January 2007).
University of Tasmania
The Foundations of University Learning & Teaching is the first unit in the Graduate Certificate in University Learning & Teaching, and is compulsory for all new academic appointees. The unit begins with a four-day face-to-face component, with subsequent follow-up activities online.
University of Western Australia
The Foundations of University Teaching and Learning programme is offered every semester to support staff relatively new to the University as well as staff with teaching experience who wish to refine, test out, validate or develop their present conceptions of good teaching and their current teaching practice. The semester long programme is open to academic, general and research staff who may be involved in teaching. Preference is given to staff teaching during the semester. New academic staff members are expected to attend this programme as outlined in their letters of offer of appointment.
University of Western Sydney
The Foundations program is divided into three modules that run over two semesters, and is equivalent in workload to one unit at the Masters level. It is offered twice a year commencing in February and July, and must be completed within 18 months of joining the University.
University of Wollongong
The University Learning and Teaching (ULT) Course is offered to all University of Wollongong academic teaching staff and casual teaching staff through the Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR) at no cost.
Victoria University
All new teachers at VU are required to attend the Induction for Teaching at VU workshop (also known as AET4100 Learning Matters at VU).
New Zealand
University of Auckland
The University Teaching and Learning: An Intensive 3-Day Course provides an intensive overview of key concepts and strategies involved in university teaching and learning. The range of topics includes teaching large classes, working with small groups, engaging active learning, diversity in the classroom, effective e-learning, course design and assessment, and getting feedback on your teaching. Required for all academic staff new to university teaching; highly recommended for experienced teachers as well.
Massey University
Introduction to Teaching & Learning in University (TMTEACHL2) is a two-day programme introducing staff new to teaching and/or Massey University. It provides an opportunity for new staff to engage with colleagues to review and reflect on a range of practical and relevant teaching and learning strategies. The workshop is interactive and encourages the use of innovative and creative strategies in teaching and learning. This introductory workshop will provide a teaching and learning theoretical framework and an overview of a variety of topics that are further explored in other workshops throughout the semester. Workshops will be interactive and will reflect best practice to encourage innovative and creative strategies in teaching and learning.
Victoria University of Wellington
It is a university requirement that ALL newly appointed teaching staff (regardless of experience and including those on short-term appointments) attend the Orientation programme during the first 12 months of their employment. Furthermore, staff with less than three years of tertiary teaching experience are expected to complete a total of 20 hours of professional development within their first two years of employment. Please speak to the UTDC about where you fit into these requirements if you have any questions or concerns.
University of Otago
The Higher Education development Centre runs a programme at the start of each academic year to introduce new staff to university teaching. Although the main purpose of the course is as an introduction to university teaching for those new to the task, experienced teachers are more than welcome to attend and treat the course as a refresher.
Hong Kong
City University of Hong Kong
The Education Development Office (EDO) has a pivotal role to play in the professional development of academic staff, student learning, and e-learning initiatives, and has responsibility for bringing teachers and students together to develop effective pedagogy for enhancing student learning. EDO has developed the Strategic Teaching Enhancement Programme (STEP) to assist new and experienced academic staff to adapt to the changing nature of the environment in which they work.
