Australia

Edith Cowan University
All new staff at ECU are required to participate in a three hour workshop in teaching at ECU. In addition, casual academic staff are required to participate in a six-hour workshop, a reciprocal peer observation of teaching and participate in three meetings wit the unit coordinator . All new ongoing and contracted staff are required to participate in a semester-length course Teaching@ECU: Principles and Practices. If completed at an appropriate standard this course can count towards the Graduate  Certificate in Tertiary Teaching.

University of South Australia
The Teaching @ UniSA program is designed to improve the teaching skills of academic staff through an exploration of a range of teaching and learning issues.

James Cook University
A suite of university-wide induction programs for academics was introduced in 2004 as conditions of probation. Teaching at JCU: Principles and Practices for academics new to university teaching is a 2-day face-to-face program with a series of follow-up tasks to be completed within the first year of appointment, and an online Blackboard organization site with discussion forum and information posted. It complements HR online induction, School-based specifics, and an induction into research currently being developed by Research Division. It is proposed to articulate the induction program with the Graduate Certificate offered by the School of Education. Shorter induction programs are offered as refreshers for experienced teachers, and for sessional staff.

University of Wollongong
The Introduction to Tertiary Teaching course (ITT) is offered to all University of Wollongong academic teaching staff and casual teaching staff through the Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR) at no cost. ITT is comprised of three units is designed to be completed over one or two sessions.

University of Sydney
3-day professional development program run by the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) for staff at the University of Study. The purpose of this program, facilitated by ITL academic staff, is to give you a basic introduction to higher education teaching and learning principles

University of Technology, Sydney

University of New England
Teaching and Learning Centre conducts orientation programs for new academic staff. These are held regularly and focus on the expectations of and support for academic staff at UNE with respect to teaching and research. They are held in conjunction with an orientation program for both academic and general staff which covers a range of UNE-wide information relevant to all staff.

Victoria University of Technology
CEDS offers a program of workshops for new teachers throughout the year. These include Teaching Techniques, Technologies for Teaching, Using web based resources for teaching, Assessing student learning, Peer reviewed teaching. These are conducted in a 3 day program or as modules.

La Trobe University
The ADU acknowledges a special responsibility for new and inexperienced academic staff. It offers a range of programs each February and June, with follow up activities and the opportunity for individual consultation throughout the year. The ADU presents workshops and seminars throughout the year. These are designed to support staff in their ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of their students' learning. Topics covered include: The essentials of course planning, Teaching large and small groups in different settings, Aspects of understanding and improving student learning and assessment. Specialisations such as postgraduate supervision and inclusive teaching are also included.

University of Melbourne
The University provides an integrated Academic Staff Orientation and Induction to Teaching program for commencing academic staff. The program covers information essential for making an effective start to an academic career within the University. All recent and new academic appointees are strongly encouraged to participate in the program.
This is a 2 day program.

Monash University
This intensive, workshop held over three and a half days is intended for beginning academics who have had at least one semester's experience of university teaching. The program includes an introduction to: planning and preparing to teach and assess, reflecting on and evaluating teaching practice, lecturing and small group teaching

The University of Adelaide
The Teaching at University course focuses on learning and teaching at Adelaide University. The course is designed for staff teaching, or intending to teach, in a university. Teaching at University courses are open to all academic staff at the University of Adelaide. One of the conditions of tenure is that staff should undertake a program of teaching development.

Flinders University
Staff Development and Training Unit (SD&TU) provides a Flinders Foundations of University Teaching program (FFOUT) aimed at newly appointed staff who are new to university teaching. FFOUT is delivered in two parts: Part 1: a common core undertaken by all participants. This is a four day intensive course and each day takes a particular focus: How Students Learn and What is Worth Learning at University, Translating Learning Outcomes and Needs into a Design for Teaching, Developing an Academic Career in the University Educational Context, Assessment of Learning and Evaluation of Teaching. Part 2: a Personal Learning Portfolio designed according to participants' particular needs.

University of Western Australia
Staff who are relatively new to the university or staff with teaching experience who want to refine, test out, validate or develop their present conceptions of good teaching and the practices they currently engage in as teachers. The program is open to academic, general and research staff who may be involved in teaching. Participation in the workshop, the online module and the follow up sessions gives advanced standing towards a Graduate Diploma in Education (Tertiary and Adult) from Murdoch University. Duration: Initial Workshop: 2.5 days (17 hours) Online module: 2 hours,Follow - Up program: Seven 2 hour sessions, during semester (14 hours), Total: 33 hours

The University of Queensland
This four day course for new academics has two parts. The first part of the course will be run over three days and will focus on skills and methods to facilitate tertiary teaching and learning. The skills emphasis will be framed by current developments in teaching and learning theory and understandings of the tertiary teacher as a reflective practitioner who strives for continuing improvement in her or his professional practice. The second part of the course, run later in the semester, will be structured in response to needs identified by participants. New academic staff will be supported throughout their first year at the University of Queensland by staff from TEDI and be given opportunities to continue formal professional development.

Australian National University
A series of 6 seminars held for all staff with an interest in teaching. Participants in this seminar series will discuss key issues in teaching, learning and supervisory practice, with an emphasis on practical case studies and individuals' own experiences

University of Newcastle
The Graduate Certificate in the Practice of Tertiary Teaching is offered through the Faculties of the University. The Coordination and delivery of the courses is provided by staff with recognised expertise from across the University. The Program consists of 3 core courses and participants then choose one of three electives - Student Centred Teaching, Online Learning and Supervision and Mentoring. The development of a teaching portfolio is a theme across all courses and mentoring at the School level is also provided.

NEW ZEALAND

Lincoln University
Teaching and Learning Services run a two-day workshop annually, providing new staff with the opportunity to get to grips with being a teacher at Lincoln and to meet other staff and form a network that will help support you as you settle into your role.

University of Auckland
The Induction course consists of two components A and B:

A. Introduction to the University

This a one-day workshop in three sections. The first outlines the University and employment matters; the second deals with facilities and services to support university staff; the third focuses on research and the services that support the academic staff member in this role. A small team of key people will comprise a panel for each of the three sections.

B. Principles and Practice of University Teaching/Learning

This 12 hour course is spread over three days to allow for reflection and practical application of core concepts in course design and teaching. Through participation in the course, staff will become familiar with the notion of deep approaches to student learning and how to encourage it through ecological alignment of outcomes, assessment, teaching mode, content selection and evaluation. The course is complemented by online resources which assist with practical application of the principles in the departmental context. Attendance is credited towards the forthcoming Certificate in University Teaching and Learning.

Auckland University of Technology
The Centre for Educational and Professional Development offers academic staff several options for induction to the university. All staff (academic and allied) attend 'A Good start'. Whereas the Introduction to teaching, learning and research is aimed at new academic staff and is offered as a block course over two days or a series of eleven workshops.

The 'Introduction to teaching, learning and research' program is a series of eleven introductory practical workshops aimed at new, part time and contract lecturers with limited or no teaching experience. It is also useful for teaching staff who want a ''refresher''. Staff are welcome to attend one session, or several, or all. The series is also delivered as a block course at the start of each semester. These sessions provide basic skills for new teachers until they are able to attend the Certificate in Tertiary Teaching. If required, the workshops can be adapted to suit specific needs of individual program or module groups.

'A Good Start' is an eight hour introductory seminar designed to welcome and familiarise new staff members to AUT. All new staff are expected to attend the two half-day sessions which are offered on the first and second Friday of each month. The seminars are offered in a one full day format three times during the year. The first session, 'Getting On at AUT' introduces new staff to key people, places and ideas that are central to AUT. Participants will extend personal networks and resources and develop strategies to integrate and succeed as a staff member at AUT. Session two, 'The Way of life at AUT,' covers a range of university wide policies, aspects of organisational culture as well as some of the legal obligations and standards expected of AUT staff.

University of Canterbury
ITALIC: Integrating Teaching and Learning in Context An on-line professional development course designed for both new and experienced university teachers. ITALIC offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on and make changes to current teaching practices, participate in lively, teaching-related discussion with colleagues from across the Canterbury and Lincoln campuses and begin an engagement with the scholarship of teaching. It is also a good opportunity to experience on-line learning from the students' perspective! The course involves on-line discussion forums based around fortnightly 'themes'. An important aspect of ITALIC involves working with colleagues in small groups to give and receive feedback on selected aspects of teaching (eg planning, delivery, assessment, evaluation). Participation is likely to involve a time commitment of approximately 5 hours per fortnight.

University of Waikato
Academic Staff Induction Program
This program is offered by the Teaching and Learning Development Unit (TLDU) and is offered before the commencement of each major teaching semester (not Summer School). It consists of a range of modules designed to assist both new and existing academic staff in a wide range of knowledge and skill development. Titles include: Conceptions of Teaching and Learning, Designing Courses and Classes, Using Your Voice Effectively, Using Technology to Enhance Learning, Teaching for Student Diversity, Facilitating Tutorials, Teaching for Learning in Labs and Practicals, Principles of Assessment, Developing a Teaching Portfolio, etc.

Massey University
New teaching staff appointed to a full time position for more than a year are also strongly urged to complete the Teaching Development Program in their first year and are required to complete it within two years. Those appointed for one year or less or on a part time basis are required to attend specific half day courses.

Victoria University of Wellington
It is a university requirement that ALL newly appointed teaching staff (regardless of experience and including those on short-term appointments) attend the Orientation to Teaching program during the first 12 months of their employment. Furthermore, staff with less than three years of tertiary teaching experience are expected to complete a total of 20 hours of professional development within their first two years of employment. The Orientation to Teaching program is spread over four days in February, with two short (2 hour) follow-up sessions later in the semester. All the workshops will be interactive, practical sessions, informed by relevant research and run by experienced facilitators.

University of Otago
HEDC offers a range of support activities for new academic staff. These are listed on the left of this page. Firstly, selected key documents with essential information have been compiled and can be accessed electronically. In February we run a three day introductory course for those relatively new to teaching and in July the New Staff Conference and New Teachers Day at which you can meet senior managers and various support staff from around the university. The conference focuses on how the university operates, academic careers and Treaty of Waitangi issues. It is an excellent opportunity for you to meet others new to the institution. The New Teachers Day is an intensive one day program suitable for both new teachers and those who wish to refresh their teaching.

HONG KONG

City University of Hong Kong
A Teaching Enhancement Course is offered to introduce the fundamental aspects of learning and teaching to academic staff members who wish to enhance their teaching. Ten workshops are offered throughout the first semester.
