Practicum within the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management

The School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management offers an Industry Placement to its Honours students. Currently, all students undertaking Honours in the Bachelor of Environmental Management are required to complete an Industry Placement while Honours students from other awards, such as the Bachelor of Arts with a major in Geography or Environmental Studies, may take it as an elective. The Industry Placement is an assessed six unit topic which counts towards the overall Honours mark.

Industry Placements are organised by the Director of Studies, Bachelor of Environmental Management. Each placement is covered by an agreement between the Director of Studies, the placement provider and the student. The agreement is largely modeled on that used by the Bachelor of Technology (Ecotourism) and covers issues such as hours worked, the tasks to be performed by the students, starting and completion dates for the placement, insurance liabilities, disciplinary protocols and other relevant matters.

Industry Placement was first made available in 1998 when four students undertook the Honours year in the Bachelor of Environmental Management. In 1999 some 20 students went to industry placement with the Bachelor of Arts students included for the first time. Industry placements have been located in a wide variety of workplaces including:

  • the mapping of weeds for the non-government organisation Trees for Life;
  • the District Council of Alexandrina;
  • SANTOS
  • the City of Charles Sturt;
  • a small consultancy business concerned with the environmental monitoring of the Penrice salt fields;
  • the City of Onkaparinga, in both their Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and land use planning areas;
  • the City of Adelaide;
  • the Onkaparinga Catchment Management Board;
  • the Bookmark Biosphere Trust;
  • and the large consulting firm Kinhills.

Industry placements are marked by the Director of Studies on the basis of assessment sheets filled out by the student and the placement provider.
