APPENDIX - UNIVERSITY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH POLICY: Section 3

Research training and research higher degrees

Research training will be conducted in accordance with the University's Research Training Management Plan, a companion document to the Research Management Plan. In order to facilitate the development of appropriate policies for maintaining and monitoring standards in higher (and honours) degrees, the University has adopted the following broad definitions:

  • Honours research projects generally have the objective of providing experience in project design, analysis and use of data and other relevant information under supervision.
  • Masters degrees by research generally have the objective of training students in research techniques, in critical evaluation of the methods appropriate to their field of study, and in the application of those methods by conducting a specified program of research under supervision. Examiners of a thesis submitted for a masters degree need to satisfy themselves that the student has met University criteria. There are substantial research components in some masters degrees by coursework which have similar objectives to masters degrees by research.
  • The Doctor of Philosophy degree has the objective of producing graduates with the capacity to conduct research independently at a high level of originality and quality. The student at the end of candidature must be capable of conceiving, designing and carrying to completion, a research program without supervision.
  • The PhD candidate will uncover new knowledge either by the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories or the innovative re-interpretation of known data and established ideas. Examiners of a thesis submitted for PhD or MD need to satisfy themselves that the student has met University criteria.
