Student and Staff Expectations and Experiences Project

The three South Australian universities and teachers at a number of high schools around the state are involved in an ALTC funded study aimed at identifying and addressing the mismatch between student expectations of university and their experiences once they commence. Making a smooth and successful transition to university remains a challenge for many students despite considerable and enhanced efforts to address the needs of those who are new to university. Transition difficulties can ultimately affect student satisfaction, success and retention. The project therefore has important ramifications for student satisfaction and, ultimately, retention.

The Academic Integrity Management Strategy (AIMS) Project will develop and implement a coherent system of education and management of academic integrity and will provide a systematic and consistent strategy for setting and managing the consequences of academic dishonesty. The project strands are include information for staff, information for students, a electronic detection trial and an examination of existing university policy.

Research

AUSSE - The Australasian Survey of Student Engagement "is developed and managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and was designed to stimulate evidence-focused conversations about students' engagement in university study."  This site includes annual reports on engagement as well as a range of research briefings and enhancement guides aimed at supporting different groups of staff within universities as they endeavor to increase student engagement.

The first year experience in Australian universities: Findings from 1994 - 2009
The study examines the experiences of first year university students from 1994 to 2009 and tracks the changing social and academic experiences of first year students studying at Australian universities.  It reports on university responses to issues such as transition, support, engagement, teaching and curriculum.
