Mandatory courses & Requirements for Academic Staff

The Collective Workplace Agreement 2006 - 2008 states that:

All Academic staff are required to participate in specific orientation and induction training as follows:

Evaluation of Teaching

Student evaluation of teaching will be undertaken, for each academic staff member with teaching duties, at least every two years, and may be undertaken more frequently, as appropriate (eg to evaluate effectiveness of a newly introduced teaching approach, for staff who may be seeking promotion and/or confirming of continuing appointment).

Faculties, in consultation with AOUs, will ensure that where a topic is being offered on a regular basis, a minimum of two students evaluations of a topic, using the topic evaluation component of the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) instrument, are conducted within a five year period.

Staff are encouraged to attend Evaluating your Teaching to assist them to comply with these requirements.

Management of Casual Academic Staff

  • Where a new staff member is a supervisor/manager, he/she is required to undertake designated training in: (i) the role and responsibilities of a supervisor, and (ii) managing the working environment.
  • A casual staff member will be required to undertake Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) wherever he/she is responsible for a semester long topic. The results of the SET will be made available to the staff member's supervisor.
  • At the end of the teaching period for which the staff member is employed, the supervisor will assess the overall performance of the staff member. This assessment will take into account the results of the student evaluation/s of teaching but not rely solely on these results.
To assist in these processes Academic staff who are supervising casual or sessional staff are urged to attend the Leading Teaching and Learning: Strategies for Working with others.
