Support for sessional teachers

These pages are designed to support academic staff who are either sessionally employed or new to Flinders University. The Academic Development Team in the Staff Development and Training Unit has prepared a series of booklets to assist teaching staff (tutors, lecturing staff, demonstrators etc) new to these roles. Professional development

Sessionally employed teaching staff may be required to participate in training workshops facilitated by the Staff Development and Training Unit.

If you are required to participate in the training sessions, you will be paid at OD1 Rate for each hour of training required. For more information, refer to salary scales.

Sessionally employed teachers are entitled to participate in any of the workshops offered by the Staff Training and Development Unit, including:

  • group management skills
  • demonstrating and explaining
  • managing tutorials
  • managing difficult situations
  • assessing student learning.

The current courses, provides a full list of all of the sessions that are on offer on a monthly basis. Each session links to an information page and enrolment form.

Support

Flinders Learning Online for Sessional Staff (FLOSS) is an online resource where you can access readings and other information. It also provides and avenue to communicate with other sessional staff and/or members of the academic development team. Access to FLOSS is automatically arranged for those staff who participate in the either the Sessional Teaching: Introduction to Teaching or Sessional Teaching: Introduction to Assessment courses.

The Teaching and Learning website provides access to a range of resources related to:

  • teaching innovation and rewards and grants;
  • using Information and Communication Technology in education;
  • support & resources for teaching and learning;
  • curriculum renewal and development;
  • assessment;
  • teaching quality at Flinders;
  • teaching methods;
  • internationalisation of the curriculum;
  • cultural diversity;
  • teaching first year students;
  • courses offered to academic staff at Flinders University

You may wish to arrange a meeting with an academic developer to discuss your specific needs. This could involve dealing with classroom issues, grading, clinical supervision or lab demonstration. To arrange a meeting email the Academic Development Team to arrange an appointment.
