Topic description
Physical activity is an essential component of healthy ageing. The positive effects of physical activity enable older people to increase and maintain their independence and well-being, thereby maximising their quality of life. This topic examines the relationship between physical activity and the physical, functional and emotional benefits in later life. Students will explore the evidence-base underpinning the current understanding of physical activity and healthy ageing, and consider how to work with older people to support and encourage physical activity as a part of daily life.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to increase students’ awareness of the role of exercise in healthy ageing. Students’ knowledge in this field will be increased by examining the evidence relating to physical activity and the ageing process, with a particular emphasis on the benefits to functional and mental health. Students will develop the ability to support older adults to incorporate movement into their daily lifestyle.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between physical activity and functional health
  2. Identify the positive outcomes accruing from physical activity in the physical, cognitive, mental and social domains
  3. Determine factors affecting the participation of older people in physical activity
  4. Demonstrate a culturally responsive, person-centred approach to working with older people to support and encourage participation in physical activity
  5. Show an understanding of appropriate types of exercise for older adults and the ability to set appropriate activity goals
  6. Apply the Australian Government’s Physical Activity Recommendations for Older Adults to a range of scenarios
  7. Critically analyse initiatives from Australia and overseas, designed to increase physical activity engagement in older adults.
