Topic description
This topic follows AMST7007 and is a research seminar based on a substantial collection of periodicals of social criticism published between 1880 and the present.
Educational aims
  1. Consider the place of the journals of social criticism in American intellectual life.
  2. Examine the intellectual formation of specific journals of social criticism representing a variety of perspectives on American society.
  3. Encourage students to evaluate the ideas of selected journals of social criticism and develop their own critique of the ideas those advanced.
  4. Further develop students' ability to work independently and engage in self-directed learning.
  5. Further develop students' research and analysis skillsby undertaking primary research.
  6. Further enhance students' abilities to communicate their knowledge in both oral and written form at a standard appropriate to the Honours level.

Expected learning outcomes
  1. Articulate the central ideas of the critique developed by the intellectualjournals chosen for analysis.
  2. Analyse systematically the strengths and weaknesses of that journal as a vehicle of social criticism.
  3. Present papers at Honours level setting out their own evaluation of that journal of social criticism.
  4. Demonstrate a high level of competence in the skills of comprehension, oral presentation, and scholarly writing.
  5. Demonstrate a scholarly approach to research materials, the ability to engage in thoughtful analysis, and the ability to synthesize a range of materials and ideas into a coherent argument.
  6. Apply their knowledge in various forms of assessment.
