Topic description
In this topic students will learn approaches to the analysis of artefacts from maritime archaeological sites in the Indian Ocean and the interpretation of past human behaviour associated with the sites. These skills are taught through critical analysis of case studies in lectures and group discussions. Students demonstrate their applied understanding of these topics through a tutorial presentation, essay, and examination.
Educational aims
The primary aim of the topic is to introduce students to the principles, theory and practice of maritime archaeology in the Indian Ocean region.

More specifically, the topic aims to:

  • explore the legal, ethical, safety, logistical and cultural heritage management issues associated with Indian Ocean historic shipwrecks within the general context of the region’s maritime heritage

  • investigate various theoretical and practical approaches to maritime archaeology in the Indian Ocean

  • address the place and role of maritime archaeology in the interpretation of Indian Ocean maritime sub-cultures and culture in a wider context

    address the field skills associated with the practice of maritime archaeology in the Indian Ocean region
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will:

  • be able to read and critically evaluate Indian Ocean maritime archaeological literature

  • demonstrate an understanding of the legislative and administrative basis for maritime heritage protection

  • demonstrate their ability to present their views to an audience of their peers

  • identify the skills and abilities needed to conduct maritime archaeology in the Indian Ocean region

  • be able to analyse and evaluate maritime archaeological reports
