The topic will provide students with the theoretical and practical training necessary for practising archaeology underwater. Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of the basics of underwater archaeological techniques including the underwater environment, specialised equipment, search and survey, site formation processes, recording, and excavation. Students should expect to learn the basic methods in identifying and recording underwater archaeological sites as well as the latest advances in underwater technology.

The primary educational aim of this topic is to provide students with the theoretical and practical training necessary for conducting archaeology underwater.

It also aims to:

• introduce students to the basics of underwater archaeological techniques

• present students with opportunities to apply their practical and interpretive skills during problem-solving exercises

On completion of this topic students will:

• have ascertained a basic understanding of the process of conducting archaeology underwater and the distinction between working underwater and on land

• have acquired the practical skills for identifying and recording underwater archaeological sites

• be able to apply those technical and interpretive skills acquired during the topic to future research projects
