Topic description
This topic builds upon students' previous knowledge to provide training in a range of advanced field methods. The topic will contain some lecture and workshop content, but will mostly be directed towards teaching students hands-on technical skills. The location of the field school is to be decided.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop advanced field skills associated with the practice of archaeology and cultural heritage management in Australia and overseas

  • further develop students' knowledge of ethical practice in archaeology

  • advance students' familiarity with theoretical, methodological and political issues in archaeological research
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • accurately and appropriately record sites, artefacts and landscapes at an advanced level

  • undertake research with communities in an ethical and culturally appropriate way

  • understand the diverse techniques used in archaeological site and artefact recording, management, and conservation

  • appropriately record, store, and disseminate findings relating to archaeology

  • record and document the fieldwork process to an acceptable professional standard
