Thesis

This topic allows students to undertake an in-depth project in archaeology or cultural heritage, either applied or theoretical. The resulting written work can be directed towards any facet of theory or practice. The topic consists of a major assignment of 18,000 words to be written under the supervision of a member of staff in the Department of Archaeology. The assignment should give evidence of the student's abilities in collecting and evaluating information; constructing, testing or defending an argument or thesis; and examining critically the available literature in their area of enquiry. The chosen area of study must be developed in consultation with the supervisor.

This topic aims to:

• develop advanced independent research skills in one area of archaeological or cultural heritage theory or practice

• allow students to generate particular skills/knowledge relating to an area of archaeological or cultural heritage theory or practice

• improve students' research skills and their ability to evaluate literature critically

• develop students’ skills in justifying and interpreting theoretical positions, and the ability to construct, test and defend an argument

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

• apply theoretical propositions to an appropriate research methodology, as part of an extended research project

• critically assess literature relating to archaeology or cultural heritage theory and practice

• carry out research in a specialised area, including the analysis of complex ideas and/or data

• construct, test and defend an argument

• demonstrate a mastery of theoretical, practical and/or political approaches to archaeology or cultural heritage
