Topic description
This topic introduces third level BA High Achiever students to the current scholarly research practices across majors in the BA. Students will undertake an approved project linked to their major sequence(s), and present their project at a "conference" organised and run by the BA High Achievers cohort.
Educational aims
This topic aims to help students:

  • develop a complex understanding of the current research practices and expertise of staff available to supervise honours and higher degree projects;

  • plan and propose independent research projects;

  • produce an analytical/creative work relating or contributing to a pre-existing research area within the BA;

  • communicate an understanding of the research culture of the Flinders University BA and how students might contribute to that research culture;

    1. To improve and/or consolidate practical aspects of a student's BA studies (e.g. time management skills; problem-solving skills; collaborative and independent learning skills; strong communication skills);

    2. To broaden students' perspectives about what further study or work opportunities are available after the completion of their Bachelor degree.
Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that on completion of this topic students will:

  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the professional and career landscape associated with success in the BA Enhanced program and the major(s) being undertaken;

  • Identify the knowledge, skills and attitudes that potential employers may have of graduates of the BA Enhanced Program;

  • Evaluate the relevance and significance of their major area(s) of study towards achieving their career goals and meeting their career expectations;

  • have developed a detailed understanding of contemporary research areas in the Flinders University BA (with particular knowledge of their primary major) and how they contribute to a broader international research culture;
  • have the capacity to extend their understanding of complex research issues into a proposed program of research;

  • have demonstrated a capacity to work independently and collaboratively with staff on a research project;

  • have demonstrated a capacity to work collaboratively with other students in the BA High Achiever Program to mount a professional-level 'mini' conference where they can present their research projects.
