Topic description
This topic aims to provide students with knowledge of: the aetiology, natural history, prognosis and recommended medical management of otological conditions in children and adults, the effects of congenital or acquired hearing loss upon children and adults, the principles and practice of primary health care, early intervention, rehabilitation, and the minimisation of disability and handicap, test selection with routine and special populations, test result interpretation, formulating the audiological diagnosis and basic management plan, the acoustic characteristics of hearing aids and other amplification devices, critical appraisal of the audiology literature.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide students with knowledge of:

  • the linguistic, psychosocial and other developmental effects of congenital or acquired hearing loss upon children and adults

  • the principles and practice of primary health care, early intervention, rehabilitation, and the minimisation of disability and handicap

  • the acoustic characteristics of hearing aids and other amplification devices

  • the selection, fitting and evaluation of hearing aids

  • the conduct, and interpretation of basic diagnostic tests of hearing and balance

  • a management or intervention plan in concert with the patient/client

  • how to interpret audiological literature in a critical and scientific manner

Expected learning outcomes
Following the completion of the topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with regard to the scientific and clinical principles and practices of audiology with particular emphasis on:

    • basic hearing aid selection and fitting

    • basic communication based rehabilitation

    • basic diagnostic assessment
