This topic introduces students to the basic principles and practices of research methods in allied health and related disciplines. The topic commences with a week-long intensive series of seminars and group workshops in research ethics, design, data analysis and research writing. Students will work through the remainder of the semester in small groups to develop a research proposal for a project to be conducted later in the year, and each group will present this in both oral and written format towards the end of the semester.

This topic aims to:

introduce students to the principles and practices of research and clinical audit in allied health and related disciplines
provide students with an insight into the need for ethical approval of research projects and the nature of an ethics application
provide students with understanding and skills in the evaluation of scientific literature, determination of research methodology using relevant biostatistics or alternate forms of data analysis.
provide students with skills to conduct research projects and to analyse research findings critically.
provide students with skills and more experience in scientific writing, and the dissemination of research findings.
provide students with experience working in research teams.

Following the completion of this topic, student will be able to:

Describe the basic principles of quantitative and qualitative research methods,
Describe the principles of research design and practice,
Outline the ethics of research
Describe basic statistical methods as they apply to their research projects
Outline the strengths and limitations of the group research process
