Topic description
This topic comprises an integrated lecture and practical focussing on the diversity of animals, plants and microorganisms. Emphasis is placed on biological diversity, evolution, the relationship between structure and function in selected groups of organisms, how organisms are adapted to their environment and how organisms interact with one another. This topic is designed for all biology students.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide a basic understanding of:
- The evolution of life on Earth
- The classification of living organisms
- Nutrition and reproduction
- How organisms adapt to changes in their environment within their own lifetimes
- How organisms adapt to changes in their environment over many generations
- How organisms interact with one another
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
- Have a basic understanding of areas covered by the topic description
- Use basic laboratory skills including technical skills, the ability to design and interpret the results of experiments, the ability to maintain a laboratory notebook and to write a scientific report
- Use basic skills to search, retrieve and interpret articles published in scientific journals
- Develop generic skills such as the ability to work as part of a team to solve practical problems
