Assumed knowledge
Skills and knowledge such as can be found in BIOL1101 Evolution of Biological Diversity and BIOL1102 Molecular Basis of Life.
Topic description
This topic will cover the theoretical background and practical skills related primarily to aquatic animal health management and product quality. Students will be expected to understand the general pathology, life history, diagnosis, management and treatment of pathogenic organisms in both hatchery and production systems. Students will be expected to develop a solid understanding of product quality, and how this can be manipulated both prior to and post-harvest.
Educational aims
  1. Provide students with an understanding of the causes (and associated preventative measures) of a range of aquatic animal diseases and the principles and techniques of disease diagnosis, management and treatment in fish, mollusc and crustacean species
  2. Provide students with an understanding of how product quality is affected and how it can be manipulated
  3. Foster skills in laboratory practicals, writing reports and ability to critically analyse aquaculture literature
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skills in necroscopy procedures and the sampling procedures required for working with aquatic animals
  2. Demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge for the manipulation of product quality
