Topic description
The topic aims to instruct students in the basic skills required for writing a grant application. Students generate a literature review of a current topic of interest in biological sciences, under guidance from the topic convenor and their supervisor. The subject area of the literature review would be in the general field of investigation the students are working in (eg Marine Biology for Marine Biology students) but would not be a defacto introduction to the student's thesis. Then students will use their literature review to generate a focussed research proposal for scientific research in biological sciences. Students will work through examples of good and bad proposals, and be shown how to improve a proposal from mediocre to competitive under the guidance of the topic convenor.
Educational aims
To provide research training for students involved in Biology Honours degrees, by developing their skills in

  1. Reviewing the literature in particular areas of biological sciences and identifying some of the important scientific questions which have been raised and those which are suggested by a review of the literature
  2. The production of a competitive Research Proposal
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Search databases in order to identify relevant literature in particular areas
  2. Generate a coherent review of such literature
  3. Identify scientific questions already raised and those suggested from the review which are yet to be answered
  4. Generate a Research Proposal which could potentially be submitted to a granting agency
