Topic description
This topic will cover the underlying business principles and methodologies and strategic insight for successful management of the commercial Biotechnology and Life Sciences sector. It will provide the strategic directions and business development issues in the biotechnology industry with an emphasis on commercialization of new products.
Educational aims
This topic within the MBA (Biotechnology) programme encourages participants to not only challenge the paradigms with which business development and commercialization are envisaged to interact with research in biotechnology and the life sciences, but to also gain a firm grasp of why and how to integrate the complexities of planning and operations from both research and business viewpoints. This topic will give students a comprehensive understanding of the commercialisation and business development skills required to manage a modern innovation-intensive enterprise.

Specific aims and objectives are to:
  1. Develop a strong understanding of Intellectual Property (IP) management for a biotechnology enterprise
  2. Gain professional skills in Licencing, Drafting contracts and making deals in the Life Sciences sector
  3. Learn how to manage technology commercialization and Research and Development portfolios
  4. Gain skills in strategic financing and valuations
  5. Develop professional communication and leadership skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to understand the commercial considerations that drive the Biotechnology Industry, and manage a research-based enterprise within the current biotechnology industry. They will have acquired the knowledge base to become effective managers and leaders capable of securing investment and managing product development portfolios, in negotiating deals with clients and in communicating effectively to management and clients. Specifically, students will be able to:
  1. Undertake valuations of biotechnology products or services
  2. Negotiate deals and licence technologies in an innovation-intensive industry
  3. Manage technology transfer and product development portfolios
  4. Understand the key components of strategic financing for the different stages of company and product development
  5. Demonstrate teamwork and leadership attributes
