Topic description
This topic addresses the theory and practice of managing a diverse workforce in the social, business and legal context of organisations operating in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. Topics addressed include the theoretical and policy context of diversity, workforce and workplace diversity in Australia, forms of diversity and inclusion, approaches to diversity, promoting diversity in the workforce, and HRM issues related to discrimination, gender equity, cultural diversity, disability, and work-life balance in the workplace.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to the theoretical concepts and practical issues related to managing diversity in organisations operating in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  1. Identify and describe concepts of diversity and inclusion applied to the workplace in Australia.
  2. Evaluate the legal, ethical, and professional issues associated with diversity management in the contemporary workplace.
  3. Identify and describe the strategic, management, compliance and human resource management issues associated with developing and implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace.
  4. Describe and apply the legal framework regulating the management of workplace diversity and inclusion issues.
  5. Identify and describe potential differences in managing diversity in Australia and selected country contexts in the Asia-Pacific.
  6. Analyse practical case studies of equity, inclusion, diversity and discrimination in the workplace.
