Topic description
The topic involves practical work in a range of typical marketing activities. Students will learn about the types of marketing activities performed by businesses and public enterprises. Students will then apply some of these practices to businesses (either real or hypothetical) in the form of reports, demonstrations, proposals or content. Some of the assessable work will be individual and some in groups. There may also be the opportunity for some students to undertake business internships.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:
  • provide students with the opportunity to prepare and demonstrate responses to practical issues in marketing. The responses will be in the form of individual or group projects in a range of marketing activities
  • ensure that students are exposed to implementation skills for the types of projects they will encounter in typical marketing departments in the private, public and NPO sectors
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
  1. Use marketing research skills to identify and report on market opportunities
  2. Develop a communications program such as a PR campaign or an advertising campaign
  3. Describe the process of employing marketers, sales staff, consultants and agencies in a marketing department
  4. Interact with stakeholders via activities such as consumer surveys and loyalty programs
  5. Describe the components of a marketing logistics network and how they fit with the business's processes
  6. Develop the content of a web-based marketing campaign
  7. Schedule and implement business events such as trade shows, awards presentations and product launches
  8. Explain the process involved in new product development
  9. Engage constructively in implementation projects for a range of sectors such as retail, sport, tourism, business services, manufacturing and government.
