Topic description
This topic outlines: the principles and practice of Workplace Health and Safety; identification of workplace hazards; risk management; major statutes and codes of practice (South Australia); consultation and worker involvement; workplace health and safety auditing.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to the principles and practice of occupational health and safety management. The topic covers the identification of workplace hazards, the application of risk management principles, understanding of the major statutes and codes of practice concerning occupational health safety and welfare in South Australia, consultation and worker involvement, and experience of general workplace health and safety auditing.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • understand the practical and theoretical aspects of managing workplace health and safety
  • understand risk management principles as they apply to OH&S (including statistical monitoring)
  • interpret OH&S regulations that apply in South Australia
  • perform a general workplace and office audit to monitor workplace health and safety compliance and identify areas for improvement
